  • Apple & Google have unfair 'vice-like grip' on smartphone markets, says UK regulator

Not so long ago Microsoft had a go trying to be a third mobile platform. They even bought Nokia to make it happen.
They know tech and had a more than decent OS, and they failed.
If Microsoft and Nokia together can not manage to be a competitor who can?

Forcing Apple and Google to make their products worse is going to make competition happen?

The lack of apps and the faffing around of hardware support didn't help the MS cause. They are doing something similar with W11 and the T2 requirement.
They could have sold their phones into the corporate world as they were pretty good but they were far too late to the market. After the first year, they seemed to lose faith in their product. After that, it was all downhill.

There is no way to turn off that new television microphone that is also connected to the internet for streaming. We live in a world where there is actually no secure space to talk.
If you really, really have to connect that TV to the internet then put a firewall on the connection. A Raspberry Pi would do the job very well. Then monitor the outgoing connections and block those that are related to the microphone.

My so-called 'smart TV' has never been connected to the internet and never will. I get my TV via FREESAT and a Humax set-top box that also is not connected to the internet.

If you can put a tool like 'Little Snitch' on your macOS system. You will be surprised at just how many connections are requested by mundane operations. Deny them all.

Firefox is my main browser on Linux, Mac and Windows. I do not want to contribute to a Google dominated browser. That being said, had to use Google Chromium for YouTube because the previous version of Firefox has some problems (mostly on Linux). So far this Firefox 95 is working fine with YouTube for me.
I don't follow this.  Boycott Google's browser but support Google's video sharing platform?  Do you "Google" things you want to find?
    I watch YouTube but :-1:
I don't log in. Pointless really as I've never had any form of account on a google owned service.
It is done on a totally sandboxed VM that is restored every 2-3 days.
All internet access is via a VPN that makes me appear as being in Warsaw, Poland.
On my home network, google.com is blocked by my firewall.
My default search engine is duckduckgo.

If you care about your own security on the internet then you have to spend some time working on it.

  • Apple Watch design & battery are inherently unsafe, claims lawsuit

So 7 generations in and we still think it is a defective design? How many million watches sold? How many swollen batteries?

The shyster lawyers will just say... Even the remote possibility of one screen breaking is why my clients need a billion dollars in damages. (or words like that)

I hope the shysters get slapped down hard for this. If they win then literally anything made of glass will become an expensive liability.  Glass can break. Humans have known that for millennia but now we get the lawsuits.
    IANAL etc etc etc

  • Tesla selling $50 Cyberwhistle, Musk mocks $19 Apple polishing cloth

What exactly is 'cyber' about a totally analogue whistle?

Never mind... the Tesla cultists will lap it up as always. Just like 'fart' apps in their computers on wheels.
    {yes, I'm not a fan of Tesla but I do drive an EV that is more than adequate for my needs and that does not include traffic light drag races}
