Wemo Outdoor Wi-Fi Smart Plug review: great for your annual holiday lights and outdoor liv...
While you don’t need to have the WeMo app (or iDevice, Eve, Rachio, Koogeek, etc. apps) to operate your HomeKit devices, you do need these apps to update the devices’ firmware (to fix issues), so you end up installing (and in some cases signing up for an account) anyway.Too bad HomeKit doesn’t push the device’s firmware for the manufacturer (like the HomePod works), completely preventing the need for the standalone app, as I wonder what data those apps disclose to the manufacturers.
One thing I wish these reviews would cover is the quality and resiliency of the Wi-Fi radio and IP stack baked into these devices. Some really struggle with auto-reconnecting after a Wu-Fi outage, without being powered off/on (which means a visit to the electrical panel for in-wall light switches and outlets). -
Apple potentially weighing removal of included iPhone cable, other accessories
Dear Apple, please offer a charger as a free add-on, giving owners who don't have a USB-C charger, a choice to opt in or out. You can still save the environment by leaving out those non-recyclable Apple stickers. I have more of those things sitting in a drawer than I can count. They produce carbon, but don't keep your phone charged. -
Apple stops shipping 5W power adapter, EarPods with any iPhone order
lkrupp said:I am in total agreement with this policy. It is environmentally sound and will reduce the growing piles of unused accessories. I myself have both chargers and ear pods from my iPhone 6 and iPhone 8 laying in a drawer along with the charger for my series 0 Apple Watch. I can only imagine what others have collecting dust or being thrown away. And for those who will rage about this... go suck on a rusted razor blade. -
