  • Foxconn India drops recruitment discrimination against married women

None of which prevents the hiring agents from continuing to discriminate during the interview and selection process. But it's a start.

  • Hack upgrades Mac Studio internal SSD for less than half of Apple's prices

This will probably be less attractive for the next Mac Studio, since the probability it will not have TB5 is indistinguishable from zero, making the connection to a fast SSD cheap and simple.  There will probably still be use cases for replacing the internal storage, but I suspect they'll be less compelling.

  • UK group wants $4 billion payout for iCloud users

The person literally wrote "To say you don’t *have* to use iCloud is disingenuous. The truth is that you have to work to avoid using iCloud. And even when you set it up to avoid it, OSes revert to the default saving to iCloud after each major upgrade."

Which part of that is BS?

Is the UK different in this regard?  I have never had to reset my "don't use iCloud" preference after any update in recent memory.  I've updated my iPhone 11 with every update since I've owned it, both minor and major, and the only time I've ever had to turn iCloud off was the one time I wiped the entire phone and started over.  Never had to do it any other time.

Sure I can turn off iCloud. But if I want to use any alternative service that offers similar functionality, that's not just an initial set-up and configuration (which is to be expected), but rather, a constant fight, because Apple keeps railroading you into their own service.

As above, I have not experienced this particular instance of "railroading" (not that there aren't plenty of other examples), nor have I ever had my other family members, for whom I am tech support, ever complain of it.

  • Power press: Fixes for Apple's oddly-placed Mac mini button

    chasm said:
What I think the nit-pickers here are overlooking is that for $600 you can get a machine that KICKS THE **SHIT** out of any Windows PC at that price point. That’s kind of a big deal, you guys, and really should be the focus of most reviews of the base model.
Except, it cannot run Windows OS. Why would any Windows PC user consider buying a Mac Mini when it won't run the only thing that they need it to run?

It's not Windows I want to run, it's my games and all the attendant apps that go along with them.  Most of the other stuff I run could probably be done either place.  I suspect that's probably true for many Windows users.  Another consideration is that I can replace or upgrade my CPU, RAM, graphics card, and storage any time I want, in any order I want, and far less expensively than I can with any Mac product.

One of the reasons the base Mini would be at all appealing to me (at least if my needs weren't being met by Windows) is because I can add external storage to it without paying Apple's ridiculous price for additional, and without buying a new Mini entirely.

Are things that different in the U.K.?  I use Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox on my phone and iPad all the time.  That hardly seems monopolistic to me.
