Congo government plans to crack down on buyers like Apple for conflict minerals
AppleInsider said:However, in May, lawyers for the Congo government alleged Apple ignored the DRC's requests for proof the iPhone maker wasn't using minerals mined from areas that profit militant groups.Mostly because proving one's innocence goes against what most Americans feel like is a basic human right, i.e. the whole "innocent until proven guilty" principle that is supposed to underlie American justice (even though it's likely we can all cite examples of precisely the opposite principle actually in action).I recognize that principle doesn't apply everywhere, but since Apple is an American company, they no doubt feel that acting according to that principle is the wisest course of action. -

Apple accused of forcing employees to sign illegal contracts, quashed labor efforts

There are some things, both rights and responsibilities, that cannot legally be contracted away. Not that people don't still try, though.
