Party's over: Apple tries to shrink costs of Apple TV+ productions
nmemac said:I realise I am probably an outlier on this, but I stopped watching much broadcast TV over a decade ago because I got tired of series being cancelled with no conclusion to a story at the end of a season, often ending with a cliffhanger for the next series that never came. I often waited for the end of a series to buy dvd complete series boxsets if they reached a satisfying conclusion.Streaming has possibly made this even worse, with many shows cancelled across different platforms before they reached a natural ending in the storytelling. Streaming services are under pressure to see a return, but I think some patience is required and viewing figures cannot be judged on a single season - the advantage of streaming that should not be thrown away is that people can come to watch a series in its entirety years after it first started, with many people binge-watching an entire series from start to finish in one go. Evan now I rarely watch an Apple show unless it gets go ahead for at least a second series, or more... i'm not going to waste hours of my life each year on shows that get cancelled with no conclusion. Whilst growing rapidly, Apple's offering is still too thin to be judged properly, and with uncertainty still surrounding shows like Foundation.
Maybe try to address why they're not successfully reaching a wider audience before cutting their legs off below the knee...
You might be an outlier, but you're certainly not alone. I am currently watching Smallville, which I only did for the first season when it was broadcast, because I knew it had a satisfying ending. Breaking Bad was another one. The Fallout series is another one that I probably won't watch any more of until it ends, and then only if it ends well. There's too many cancelled shows to waste my time watching an incomplete story.

Microsoft blames European Commission for global CrowdStrike catastrophe
avon b7 said:Did the EU make Microsoft do this worldwide?
The problem last week had nothing to do with the EU. It was sloppy coding, sloppy testing and with little to no resilience built into the whole process.
Microsoft didn't do this at all. It was Crowdstrike that did it.

Cops find $30k of fake Apple products in PA traffic stop
charlesn said:Just noticing that the product featured most prominently in the photo by far in this bust of "Apple counterfeit products" is, in fact, a no-name wired earphone that is clearly not an Apple product. How is it even "counterfeit" without a brand name? They might be stolen goods, but I'm surprised thieves even take the risk for a product of such low value. The boxes with the Apple logo on them could conceivably be counterfeits, or stolen, but I have no clue how "Earphone [illegible]" or "Smart Watch" could be so considered, unless there's Apple branding elsewhere on the box.My guess is that being caught with "counterfeit" goods is a more serious charge than possessing stolen goods, so that's how the whole batch is framed. -
iOS 18 review: expansive customization with a pinch of AI
dutchlord said:Apple Intelligence is a joke. It’s not only a slow rollout, it will not even be available in the EU.As the owner of the that particular playground, the EU certainly has the legal authority to make all the kids who want to play there share their toys. But then, one shouldn't really be surprised when some of the kids decide to leave their best toys at home now, should one?dutchlord said:What is iOS18 about anyway? New emoticons again? Customization? (available on all other non-Apple products for ages). Siri cannot even understand Dutch properly amd is switched off for years. Focusing on speed and thickness are the wrong priorities. I never had a slow Apple device even after using it for years. I prefer better battery life over thickness. Come on Apple, you are lagging behind on so many fronts and nothing seems to move. Even a new 27 inch M3 iMac is not anticipated. Sad. For now. I will skip iOS18 waiting for better times to come.
If "all other non-Apple products" have had features you consider important "for ages", why aren't you using one of those platforms instead? I can certainly understand the sentiment that Apple isn't perfect, and that improvements are still there to be made, but the acid tone of your note suggests that you might be happier elsewhere. What you're doing is not constructive criticism, it's whinging. -
Florida has temporarily suspended support for its digital driver's license app
anonymouse said:Well, does anyone really want to hand their unlocked phone to the LEO who just pulled you over? Not if they're smart. However, from what I've heard, such apps can display the ID from the lock screen.I'm still not giving my phone to a cop when not legally required to do so.
