  • Computing would be totally different had Apple not been formed 49 years ago, today

I started in 1981 with an Apple ][+ 48K, 143K disk drive, Centronics printer and Zenith green screen and PFS software for 4500 $ CDN. That money could still get you a decent car back then, crazy. I added an aftermarket 16K memory card, an 80 character video card, a Z80 processor card for Pascal. Two years after that I bought an Alpha Syntauri synthesizer that combined a custom boxed keyboard (from Korg) and Mountain Computer synthesizer (2 boards) with light pen. All the slots were full (including disk controller & printer interface cards) and it required one of those fans that hooked over the grill on the side of the case. Then the year after that the Mac came out, oh well, gotta start over.
I have also been well treated in repairs. They replaced a Time Capsule 2 years out of warranty among other great Customer Service over the years. It's a great company.

  • WSJ reported Apple was headed for a slump before one of the biggest rallies ever

If people have not figured it out, they soon will. The Media and Journalist that work for them are trying to remake the world in their own image, they want the world to operate how they see it should be. They are story tellers not fact communicators, the story in their head is far more important than the any facts.
I agree that reporting on Apple reliably misses the point, and D.E.D. is right to call them out on it... however I think it's entirely possible to do this without lumping in "The Media and Journalist."

I'm curious as to what you consider to be a reliable arbiter of true factual reporting... or if you're at the point where you've decided that objective truth just isn't a thing.
    Dilger, Dediu, Cybart, Ritchie

There is no one, and I mean no one, else worth reading if you want to know the good and bad on Apple.
Agreed, although I would also add Gruber and Dalrymple to that.

Interesting (enlightening) explanation over at https://mdj.substack.com/p/mdj-20200128

especially the section titled “So why is there so much stupid?”.
Many thanks for that. That article and particularly the section you pointed out finally clarifies once and for all, at least for me, the most cogent answer to that very question they, and I, have asked for all these years. Their answer makes so much sense … in a tragically sad way.

  • Kuo: High preorder demand for Apple Watch Series 4, low expectations for 5.8-inch iPhone X...

Demand for the 5.8-inch iPhone XS, however, appears to be lower than expected.
Ah, the age-old question: expected by whom?
I certainly share your scepticism as far as analyst expectations are concerned, especially when they have an impact on the share price. However I believe in this context it would be Apple's own expectations. Barring any production issues I would think Apple has placed purchase orders according to their expectations. It's a simple matter of going online on the Apple Store and check the expected Delivery Dates.

I haven't gone through all of the new product line, but I can certify that as of Saturday evening, only 1 day after pre-orders, my Series 4 order has indeed dropped to 3-4 weeks. As a user I was of course disappointed, yet on the other hand as a shareholder I'm quite pleased.

Math isn’t my strong suit, but how is going from 42mm to 44mm a 30% increase?
It's the difference in display area
    44mm  977
    sq mm
    42mm  740
    sq mm
    Differ.   32.0%
