  • Apple admits to Imagination Technologies talks, declines takeover bid

    http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/09/30/apple-continues-building-out-its-ios-gpu-development-team-in-orlando

Apple describes its Orlando operations as a "world-class" graphics intellectual property development team.

Apple moving to its own IP is inevitable.   Within the next 3 generations I'm betting that Apple delivers its own GPU core.  Imagination is a god
IP buy but it likely contains a lot of stuff that Apple doesn't want/need.

I find it really helps if you have a clue before commenting. The Orlando team will be about customising the PowerVR IP (as they do with ARM because Apple also have a PowerVR architecture license) not developing its own GPU. That is really very hard to do and extremely expensive, not to mention that it would have to be compatible with what they're already using !

Imagination (IMG) IP is already hugely tailored to Apple's needs and various family members are tailored almost specifically to them.

I guarantee that the only way Apple will have its own GPU within 3 generations will be by buying IMG.

  • Apple in talks to take over long-time graphics chip partner Imagination Technologies

    It's a rumour, from Ars Technica !

I'd love it as I'm a shareholder but if true a news release needs to be made in short time or the directors are in the sh!t for effectively sitting on insider information not available to all of the market.

Intel are are no longer shareholders and wrote PowerVR out of their roadmap last year so no issue there.

Imagination also have great IP in camera, communications and CPU as well as graphics and video that Apple already license so would be a wonderful buy at $1.5bn (my wishful thinking valuation !) which is less than half what Google paid for a thermostat ha ha.

MIPS is exactly the reason why IMG are layering off. MIPS is doing pants. Most router are switching, or has a roadmap switching to ARM. even Multimedia players etc. Anything that has 30% to 50% same functionalities of a smartphone are switching to ARM.

I wish IMG could just open up the design, OpenRSIC is basically MIPS.
    Thanks,

    I suspected as much.
Except it's. Actually not really. They are laying off staff because the previous CEO went a bit bonkers buying businesses that wasted time and lost money. The current layoffs are to get rid of these areas.

It really doesn't take much effort to check this stuff. But it's easier to pipe up without checking I guess.

Apple partners should be contractually bound to shut their pie holes.
Maybe because Apple has a new vendor.

Apple should put in their vendor contracts that if they disclose information about Apple they would get fined $xxx amount.  Pretty standard stuff.
They didn't say anything about Apple in their press release.

    They are.

Imagination Technologies said nothing of the sort ! Here is a link to the company release.

THEY DID NOT MENTION ANY DOWNTURN AT APPLE.

This is a lazy reporting of lazy reporting from Yahoo's crappy newsfeed on the iPhone Stocks app.
