  • White House says FBI wants access to one iPhone, not blanket backdoor from Apple

Has anybody bothered asking the FBI exactly what they're hoping to find, and what proof there is that any such information will actually be, on the phone. I think you Americans call it probable cause or something although I may have watched one too many police programmes for my own good.

Didn't Apple say it was impossible to break into the latest iPhones and iOS ?

But if it has the touch entry, hasn't the FBI tried the touch of that dead terrorist's fingers.

I recall when a well know top end car had a touch function to start it,
thieves who took over a few of those cars from the owners,
cut off a few fingers so they could leave the owner at the roadside.
They could if they could somehow retrofit a 5C with Touch ID.....

But it's OK to ask Apple to put a whole lot of resource into solving this one single phone problem. I'm sure it would only be this one iPhone. No other ones. Honest. Would we lie to you ? After the US DoJ went after Apple so evenhandedly over the old iBooks thing and all I'm sure Apple are only too keen to help.

  • Fourth-gen Apple TVs spontaneously awaken, power on their HDTVs, users complain

Having your TV turn on occasionally is annoying, having your thermostat fail totally could be life-threatening. Slightly different.

As an aside, I have a Sony TV which occasionally turns on for no apparent reason, I have no Apple TV. A friend has a Samsung TV (also no Apple TV) that does the same. It's a thing that happens sometimes when you daisy chain half a dozen different boxes together all vying for top dog position, something's always going to want to do something in the background you weren't aware of. eg My Amazon Sony TV app has just updated and now won't let me log in.

  • Piper Jaffray lowers March iPhone estimates to 55M, sees return to growth in fall 2016

"As for the just ended quarter, Munster expects revenue of $76.5 to $77.5 billion on sales of 75 to 76 million iPhones, 5.8 million Macs and 17.5 million iPads. He pegs gross margins at 40 percent"

Wow, this guy must have been up half the night burning the midnight oil, tapping away at his calculator, checking inventory and sales channels, etc to have generated such specific numbers. Oh, hang on -

"Apple is providing the following guidance for its fiscal 2016 first quarter:
    • revenue between $75.5 billion and $77.5 billion
    • gross margin between 39 percent and 40 percent"
Really, what is the point in these people ? Do their clients actually PAY for this indepth analysis ?

So in 2 weeks' time when Apple give their forward guidance - free of charge - which will either prove correct or conservative, how long will it take these guys to chunter on before coming out with their new predictions that are pretty much identical ?

Let's not forget that this current Apple forecast shows income growth while also including 5+% added costs due to currency fluctuations.

  • Rumor: Apple to debut Bluetooth earbuds alongside 'iPhone 7,' with truly wireless left & right earp

The only thing currently stopping me dropping - and hence losing or damaging = my earphones every time I turn my head is the wire that's connecting them to the phone.
