  • How Tim Cook's Augmented Reality vision paid off for Apple

I don't know that AR is really any more popular than VR... I've seen much more hype about AR than VR. I think AR is probably more useful, but VR is more impressive so gets more press coverage. In any case both are pretty cool, but I am yet to see a particularly compelling AR app that has me coming back for more. It's more a tech demo of "look what this does", never to be used again.
The article is examining the commercial results of two strategies to earn profits, sustain development, and continue building future products.

It isn't an opinion on whether VR is neat or not.
”How Tim Cook's Augmented Reality vision paid off for Apple”
How does the story support that headline?
    Answer: It doesn’t.

No Article then No Clicks then No payday.   Look for a "How closing Apple Stores for Pandemic boosted Sales" followed by a "How ReOpening of Apple Stores Show Tim Cook genius"

I bought an iPhone 11 Pro and have never used AR.  AR had nothing to do with my decision to buy that phone. Zero.

I’ve never heard any of my friends talking about AR.

It’s not a thing yet in my circle of friends or any of the tech sites I follow. Nobody is very excited about it.

Contrast that with podcasts in the early days of iPods. Everyone was talking about them and using them.

AR is nothing like that in terms of adoption.
Yeah: a big MEH to both AR and VR.    But I do think that Apple has to continue to develop their AR software incase a killer app comes along on Android that could lead people away from Apple.

  • First ARM Mac said to arrive in 2021 with custom Apple chip

Hopefully this will come with iPadOS and not MacOS.    This makes me wonder when we will see multiple accounts on iPadOS.   An iPadOS based laptop would be all most people who purchase the macBookAir need.  One more step on the way to the universalOS able to adopt to multiple form factors.  It was obvious that this was slowly coming when Apple rolled out trackpad support and the new iPP keyboard.   May still take 5 years but it is definitely on its way.

This is all fine and dandy, but who do you suppose will be buying electric cars when gas is $1 per gallon? It is headed that way, and it may be years before gas goes back up over $4 where it begins to make economic sense to drive an electric car. I am not referring to whether it is cool or fun to drive electric, It is, but it is a financial loser below $4 per gallon.
Let's say a gasoline car gets 30 MPG.  A typical electric gets 3.5 mi/kWh. So to drive the same 30 mi, the EV uses 8.6 kWh.  >95% of charging is done at home.  US residential retail electric costs 12.8¢/kWh.  So 30 miles of electric  driving is 8.6 *.128 = $1.10 on electric versus the current cost of gasoline in $/gallon.

Of course a more complete economic and value analysis needs to include higher first cost, much lower maintenance cost, and longer life of EVs, the superior driving experience, and the convenience of not having to drive somewhere and babysit filling versus “tank is full every morning”, etc.  But the idea that EVs are a “financial loser below $4/gal” is just made up.  Break even is $1.10/gallon.  As a now-experienced EV driver, rest assured that gasoline can stay below $1/gal as long as you want, I’ll never buy another gas burner again.

Gas may be cheap now, but its only intended to drive a lot of Fracking companies out of Business.   Trump thought MBS was his friend but now he's getting screwed by him.

People are going to get much more aware of purchasing products that creates jobs in their countries and not someone elsewhere. Equally they are going become much more focused on that their hard earned money don't stuff the coffers of international companies that hardly give anything back to their markets (taxes, job creation, local economic growth).
Doubt it.  People are going to chase a bargain just like they have always done.  Government spending might reorientate to prioritise the things you list, but even that will likely only be a flash in the pan.
Brexit was pretty much a reaction on the above, as was the election of Trump. This virus is going to open eyes all over – actually it already has.
It probably opened Boris's eyes that he's lucky to have Socialized Medicine.
