Apple's 'Fortnite' takedown will cause incalculable harm to users, says Epic
You're making no sense. Walmart doesn't own the TV that I purchased from them and walked out the store with. They can't tell me what I can and cannot watch on MY TV once I purchase it. Netflix? I guess if Netflix sold a Netflix device and a service and locked the user of the device into only using Netflix then maybe we could talk similarities, but as it is, Netflix is not similar in this case.
The other companies you listed? How are they like Apple? Walmart and Amazon do not force buyer or sellers to have to sell at Amazon or Walmart. My TV example above proves once I've purchased the TV, I can do whatever I want to do with it, not what Amazon or Walmart tells me I can do with it.
You do own the piece of hardware, which is about as useful as a paper weight, or a door stopper, without the OS that runs it. And guess what: all comercial OS is only ever licensed to users, never sold.
Apple maintains absolute ownership of all its OSes, as they should. We only license it, as most of us knew very well, before making the purchase. And that also comes with terms of use, that you agreed to. If you did not like the experience, return the product, and buy something else from another vendor! I hear Samsung made a phone that doubled as a barbecue starter some years ago. Maybe that’s the phone for you?
If someone got the bucks to invest in Apple hardware, but not the wit to understand why the products are appealing, despite the premium price, well, that’s nobody else’s fault.
If you want you iPhone to work like a white box Android, you may have taken a wrong turn a while back. And I sincerely hope you never get your wish! -
Epic sues Apple after Fortnite removed from App Store
I feel for developers. Even though I have no stake, I can’t quite dismiss their argument that 30% is too high. Even though it would be hard to get a “right number”.
As dor Fortnite being out of the App Store, well, let’s just say it isn’t the worst that happened in 2020. It ultimately means nothing at all!
And yes, the fact that Epic actions were as planned and rehearsed as an Apple Event, really imparts a sleazy air around the whole thing. And that is a shame, even though I’ve never been into Fortnite, I still remember fondly the Infinity Blade saga! Ah, and yes, they were on stage with Apple, fawning at each other like newlyweds... -

Apple TV app, Apple TV+ now available on compatible 2019 LG TVs
That's good news! Now Apple only need to make Apple TV+ compatible with "compatible Apple TV models"! There is a large number os Apple TV 3rd generation (listed as compatible by Apple) users, like me, who just can't watch Apple TV+ content. Every time I play either a series or a movie from Apple TV+, in a few minutes, I'd get AV sync issues.
The same issue is not reproducible in any of the other apps, like Netflix. Solution so far: plug the HDMI cable on my MBP to watch Apple TV+ content. -
Apple's satellite program aims to send data directly to an iPhone
An iPhone communicating with a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite isn't as far fetched as some previous comments would imply. Satellite communications operate over Line-of-Sight (LoS) which is way more simple and straightforward than the multipath fading we have to deal on cellular networks. A sizable chunk out of the transmit power budget in a cellular modem is spent over the multipath fading.I didn't run the math (although I could do it later), but I'm quite sure that for a LEO satellite (which can be as low as 220 miles, or 350 km), for a lower order modulation, like BPSK or QPSK, reliable data communications (Bit Error Rate—BER— as low as 1E–6) can be achieved within the current power envelope of an iPhone.
As for the downlink vs. uplink theory, as a general rule, power availability is severely constrained in a satellite too. Not just because the size (and weight) of bigger solar panels, but mostly due to poor heat dissipation. Up there, the only heat dissipation phenomena available is irradiation, which is quite inefficient. You just can't run your electronics on many watts, or they'll simply burn up!
