  • Apple urges lawmakers to reject bill that would force it to allow side-loading

Apple need to open up their platform, ... Apple could see a new renaissance if they open their doors to more content.
The question isn't whether Apple should do this or that, the question is whether Apple should be FORCED to do those things. Don't you think Apple should have the same freedoms as someone who opens up a lemonade stand and sells only one brand of lemonade? Intelligence should never be mandated by law.

Frankly, you all might be right that Apple might win more business if they did those things you want. I don't know. But I do know that I believe in freedom and Apple should be allowed to make the wrong business choices. Can you tell me why Apple should be denied freedom?

    Agree with both comments above…
I also think Apple could start lowering their fees, especially for subscription services.
Thanks, but don't you agree that Apple's $0 charge for free apps needs to be subsidized by the charge for the bigger companies?

  • Apple shatters its own holiday financial record, hitting $123.9 billion in revenue on the ...

I've been 100% all-in with Apple for 20+ years, but I must admit I'm getting tempted to consider Microsoft's Game Pass. And that might mean I'll have to buy either an Xbox or a Windows OS. So if someone like me is thinking of moving away from Apple, that can't be a good sign for Apple's future.

  • IRS will soon demand video selfies for online user identification

In theory a video call with the people who run elections, with you showing your ID (using biometrics, like your face or fingerprint) could be enough validation of identity to cast your vote online, securely, and with a likelihood of privacy (eg, you could vote by pressing a ballot button on your screen.) But this probably won't be realized for another 50 years, even though the required technology exists today, because the political will isn't here yet.

I would expect small jurisdictions with homogenous legal frameworks, perhaps like Singapore, to take the lead in this. They will probably do this in 20 years.

  • Oral-B debuts three new iPhone-connected iO smart toothbrushes

I bought an "Oral-B Genius 6000-8000 BlueTooth Smart" about 2.5 years ago and it does much the same thing, but it works by mounting your iPhone onto a suction mount which you mount on your mirror at eye-level. Then the Oral App uses your front-facing camera to see where you are brushing.

The amount of work setting it up each time was simply not worth it, (and I was afraid my iPhone would fall into my porcelain sink and break) so I stopped using the app after one use. I still use the brusher.

I can't tell from this article if the new iO uses a different method to measure your brushing. If so, I would very much consider buying it. I like the idea of health devices recording aspects of my health into Apple's HealthKit.
