  • Spotify blows through 2021 HiFi streaming deadline, with no release in sight

(chuckle) Fair enough. I clearly touched a nerve, and AI made the right editorial decision publishing this piece, then. It generated valuable clicks and pageviews fed into the ad tracking/profiling beast on a day when otherwise there would be few. I still think "content" like this is beneath adults, as is "fandom" for multinational corporations in general, but it's OK if I'm an outlier in that regard.

I'll stand by my broader point, however: The entire tech sector—Apple, Spotify, and everyone in-between—would benefit from the discipline that focus brings. Fewer features, fewer promises. Deliver what you can intelligently and shut up about the rest.

"How many comments are needed to bring attention to this? More than 100 pages? Being a software engineer myself, I understand that such integration shouldn't take THAT MUCH time. Come on, it's hard not to conclude that Spotify has intentionally decided not to implement it. They haven't even said a simple "yes, we're on it."

It doesn't seem like Spotify cares about their users considering the number of votes on this."

"Left Spotify, this was a dealbreaker for me - Nothing happened and they don't care about the consumer - waited for a year, but nothing happened. I got 6 months free subscription with my AirPods, so it was time to leave. It's Time to Play Fair Spotify, you can't complain about not being on the HomePod, and then when they let you in you don't even bother to support it."

I find it odd that you proudly give these folks your money every month and come here to defend them? I have said this in the past.. why do folks come to an Applecentiric website to troll, and then act as if they can't comprehend why people are reacting? Like seriously?  It's like being a Sox fan and going into Yankee stadium and trash talking the Yankees. Then when someone comes back at you with a counter you act as if you have no idea why they would react in this way? Hahaha..come on. It's pretty "Obvi" you hit a nerve on Appleinsider when you troll Apple music to cover yet another of Spotify's promises not kept.

  • Apple loses lead Apple Silicon designer Jeff Wilcox to Intel

180K bonus is sad for a man of that stature, for that company.
$10M in stock, at the very least, as a signing bonus.
Then again, if someone’s not happy, no money can solve it.
Nor is it known whether Apple tried to keep Wilcox. Separately, Apple has recently been offering $180,000 bonuses to engineers to prevent them leaving.

  • Bob Iger says Apple & Disney would have merged if Steve Jobs was alive

Glad it never happened. Seeing what's available on AppleTV+ makes me shudder to think what would have happened to the entire MCU that Disney was able to build. The MCU is thee cinematic experience that my family has thoroughly enjoyed for over a decade. Something my children and I have grown up to appreciate together since they were born. We were actually saddened at the end of Avengers End Game as we thought it was over. Then the latest Spider-Man came out and we were all beyond hyped to keep it going.

No Apple product has brought us together like that.
The MCU is a Marvel product paid for by Disney. Kevin Feige was hired as a producer by Marvel in 2000. He had the idea and vision for the Avengers and a shared universe in the early 2000's. He was named president of Marvel Studios in 2007. Disney bought Marvel in 2009. Kevin Feige and Marvel would have been able to build the same universe using Apple's extremely deep pockets, just like they did with Disney. The MCU is a Marvel creation... since Iron man in 2009 I have been thankful that someone had the vision and special effects needed to be able to bring all of the cool shit I grew up reading during the late bronze and modern age of Marvel comics to the big screen... the right way.  B)

  • Apple doubled its smart speaker market share in 2021 thanks to HomePod mini

On something of a lark, I got a homepod mini for a very very low price. I jumped because I am rather curious about it. Initial impression is that it indeed has excellent sound. However, the Siri interface is still very unpredictable, and doesn't seem to understand I have a full library of music in the computer upstairs that she is connected to. Yes, I know this is fixed once I subscribe to Apple Music (and I got a free 6 month subscription to try) but having the functionality of this device tied to a subscription is something I really don't want. And yes, I also know I can go upstairs and Airplay from my library to the homepod, none of which is something I want to do. It should just work, and...well...it doesn't unless I fork over more quid on a regular basis.

I really do wish I could tie this to my Roku smart TV, but that requires I use the AppleTV box as the primary interface, and that's just one more thing to dork with.

Gene Muenster never did come through with his Apple HDTV prediction.
Do you subscribe and have your music in the cloud with iTunes match? If you had match your music would be available through the AM app on our devices and should allow Siri to search you music as well. I was an Itunes match subscriber before AM existed. B) I know you aren't wanting the additional subscription but $24.00 per year for match is better than $120.00 for a single AM subscription?

BTW An AM subscription also includes Itunes match functionality, so you can access music saved directly from AM as well as your personal uploaded music.

I just tested it out .. I asked siri to play an album that I have that I know isn't on AM and she found it and started it from track 1. Eddie Vedder made a live Blu Ray video a few years back called "Water on the Road". This is the audio rip of the blue ray that I labeled and added artwork for myself in iTunes and uploaded to match.

  • FTC sues to block Nvidia's $40B acquisition of Arm

If this acquisition is allowed it makes no sense why Apple’s App Store is being forced to open up. Apple has every right to run its products the way it wants to. Nvidia owning ARM affects multiple computing companies not just its own.

Nvidia owning ARM is a terrible idea, and should be stopped.

And that has NOTHING AT ALL to do with Apple and their app store.  Apple has NO right to run MY iPhone the way it wants.  It's MY iPhone, not Apple's iPhone.  And because it's MY iPhone and not Apple's iPhone, Apple should not be allowed to have any say whatsoever about what software I choose to run on MY iPhone.  If you want to only get software through Apple's app store on YOUR iPhone, that's your right.  But neither you nor Apple should have the ability to stop me from getting software from any source of my choosing.

And the same thing goes for in-app purchases.  MY iPhone, not Apple's iPhone.  It's only Apple's until they sell it.  Then it's MINE, not Apple's any more.  It's well past time for Apple's app store monopoly to be busted.
With the average knowledge level of users and the amount of personal info on your device at any time most people have zero business loading apps from anywhere they please. Do you realize how easy it is for a malicious app to gain root access to your device? Parents hand their kids their phones all the time to play on. Between kids loading whatever they want and older or inexperienced users doing the same.. it would be a nightmare. These same users would ultimately blame apple when they have their bank accounts stolen from or their device is not operating correctly because of malware on THEIR device. Think about how many millions of infected Windows machines there are in the wild right now from just the users I mentioned? Kids loading what they want from god only knows where on the internet. Older folks or inexperienced users falling for the amazon scam and granting remote access to someone in another country that hold their machine for ransom?

I jailbroke for years my own devices and friends and the number one thing I told people not to do was load pirated apps from the app store. There were so many cool tweaks to add from developer in the Cidia store to make your phone behave and look unique. THAT was the reason and the fun of jailbreaking. I didn't mind paying  a small developer a few bucks for a tweak they they work on and maintain on their own personal time. Not to steal apps from some shady ass store to save 99c? Other folks who decided to do that  got bank info stolen or worse... as well as a device that needs to be wiped and restored as new.

As far as in app purchases go.. I pay for most of my non apple services outside of the app store and their 30% surcharge. Youtube premium I pay $9.99 directly to google through paypal.. it is 12.99 a month through the app store subscription billing. Disney+ bundle is paid for the year after creating an account online. Shudder is another one paid for the year outside of the app store. IMHO all developers should just pass the 30% onto the customer via the monthly pricing. Let's just be upfront about it. Here is the price you can pay, or here is the price you can pay for the convenience of using the app store for billing and initial downloads and updates which all come from Apple servers.

If this hurts or is unfair to smaller devs than Apple should adjust the percentage for those smaller devs until they reach a certain monthly monetary threshold. If they never get that big they can't held to that 30% charge. It can't be free, but it needs to be fair in proportion to what they generate. I think they may do something similar to that now with smaller devs, but I could be wrong?
