  • Starlink starts $99 per month 'Better than Nothing' internet service beta

I'm desperately waiting for StarLink to become available as I've been WFH for 6 months on Verizon LTE with two bars :(  There's no broadband available in this "remote" part of NC (less than 1/2hr away from Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill - the technology hub of NC :-(
Same here in the exurbs of Northern Virginia.  I am 52 miles from the White House and I have *zero* wired broadband options.  My county is backing p2p microwave, but somehow even 40' in the air they could not pick up signal from the three towers in my immediate area.  I am stuck using AT&T Unlimited hotspots with external antennas to enjoy some fraction of the broadband experience.  Speeds vary maybe 10Mbps-40Mbps but the ping can be anywhere from 30ms to 3000ms....  We stream without particular issues, but gaming can be awesome and then lag out causing wailing from the living room.  :D

    Starlink can't come soon enough!
HughesNet should be an option for you.  It has been around for a couple of decades.
Op mentions streaming and gaming and HughesNet has some pretty small data caps? 50Gb is their largest and gaming and streaming movies in HD or anything else can eat up 50Gb pretty quickly.

  • New iPhone 12 owners bombarded with free Apple Arcade offers

When your CEO sets a goal to grow services subscriber revenue, this is what happens.

Apple previously used to state that their goal wasn’t “most” of something, but the “best” of something. Sometimes it also happened that they sold the most, as was the case with MP3 players, sometimes not, as with personal computers.

I’m sure Apple’s always had internal revenue goals, but Tim’s subscriber goal marked the first time the company had ever publicly stated they were chasing numbers.

And now we had ads within settings.
Easy with the fake outrage my goodness. There was no ad. It was a reminder below the iCloud area of setting at the very top.  You are making it as if there are pop ups all over the place when you go into the settings app because Apple is chasing numbers as you put it?  I personally received one email letting me know about the offer. I never even noticed any reminder within settings at all. I bought an new iPad back in July and no phone yet this year so I am thinking that is why I received the free offer.

Apple did the same reminder with Apple Care when I purchased my 11 Pro Max last year as well.  A subtle reminder of how long my device was eligible for Apple Care and buying options.. same place in settings so red badge same email.. same everything.  I couldn't have been the only person who had this show up when they bought new phones or iPads? Yet not a peep.. no outrage and complaints of being bombarded at all that I have seen or heard?

That reminder actually worked out good for me as I had enough cash back on a credit card to pay for apple care. I just needed to grab the card and make the purchase and the reminder helped me out. I also took advantage of another 3 free months of Arcade to see if they had more to offer since the last time I tried it for free last year.

  • Woman sues Apple for hosting 'gambling apps' after spending thousands on in-game currency

Although I don't like most freemium game business models, this certainly isn't gambling. This is the same model brick and mortar arcades have had forever. This is just spending irresponsibly.
It's a slot machine game ( Jackpot Mania ) that she was playing. You spend real cash to get currency to play the game.. How is this not gambling?

I don't agree with the lawsuit and it is a sad state that many folks in this country are in; as they refuse to accept ANY personal responsibility. I was just confused as to how you could think this app specifically isn't gambling?  Had it been a pinball machine simulator I would totally agree, but this? This is no different than a person sitting in front of a physical slot machine and dumping all of their cash into it.

Bet she wouldn’t have sued if she had won.

  • Tests show iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro batteries last two hours less under 5G

I’ll be switching off 5G completely as there’s not really any coverage to speak of around here anyways.
    That makes zero sense.
Why? If you live/work where there is zero 5G coverage why waste battery trying to find a network when you don't need to?

I'm not upgrading until at least this time next year. 5G in my area is scheduled for 2022/23 and with almost everyone travelling a lot less, there really is no need to rush into it.

iPhone 12 only uses 5G when necessary to save battery life

Apple’s Smart Data Mode is designed to save power

If you have an acceptable 4G connection I don't think your phone will be constantly roaming looking for a 5g network? That just doesn't make sense..
