  • Designers have social duties beyond a product's launch, says Apple's Jony Ive

Regarding social responsibility, Apple should design an iOS Light version to extend the use of older devices. Make it 10 years rather than a planned death in 4 years, please.
Planned death? So Apple should be responsible for making and stocking parts for a 10 year life span as well?  If a lite version makes an older device usable for 10 years wouldn't that same user want a repair if the device is still viable and in daily use?  That seems a bit unreasonable in my opinion.. It's a phone after all not a vehicle..

  • Samsung Galaxy Fold teardown suggests poor design decisions with 'massive gaps' [u]

This speaks volumes about how weak Samsung's testing is and their rush to market overwhelms engineering principles.
From what I keep hearing they have been developing this thing for years.... Which I think makes the whole thing even worse?  They didn't slap it together in a year.. they took years to develop and test and it still turned out like this?

  • Student sues Apple for $1 billion over false arrest linked to facial recognition tech

There is less than no basis to his complaint: he will likely get nothing, including no settlement. His complaint should not be directed at Apple or the security firm, as they did nothing directly to facilitate his arrest. The arrest was the result of a presumably lawfully issued warrant, so his whining about the conduct of the police and courts will do no good. Hint: this is not a matter of false arrest. He should take responsibility for his loss of his temporary identification and find another way to snatch his "15 minutes of fame!"
Let’s drag you out of bed at 5AM for a crime you didn’t commit, using an arrest warrant based on a picture that doesn’t look like you, and see if you don’t do a little “whining”.
I agree with you, but I don’t think that is the case here.

"He was forced to respond to multiple false allegations which led to severe stress and hardship,” Bah said in the complaint.

I thought the the same as you as well. Then I see his hardship was responding to allegations hahahaha. I don’t think there was an actual arrest.

  • Editorial: Could Apple's lock on premium luxury be eclipsed by an era of good-enough gear?...

Diminishing returns is here. Apple’s planned obsolescence as well. Who will prevail? The customer who has no sense will.
You’re high. Apple devices have the longest lifespan in the business — both in official support terms (iOS), and in real world useful lifespan. My primary desktop is a 2011 iMac. I have an iphone 4s that was used as a primary device by a family member until a year or two ago and now is a backup device. What other brand has the same support and lifespan longevity?
My Lenovo Thinkpad T60P laptop is over 12 years old and runs like it was new -- but with a modern OS and I'm thinking swapping its main harddrive for an SSD.  How does Apple have the "longest lifespan" ?
I thought the OP said Apple devices, not laptops specifically when referring to the longest lifespan in the business. Most of the planned obsolescence claims I have seen refer to iPhones and not Apple,s other hardware. You have to admit more folks are using older Mac laptops than they are 12 year old Thinkpads.

So yes a non Mac can have a long service life but it isn’t as likely in my opinion. My two macs at home are both late 2011 ( Mini & Air ) and they both ares still running strong. This is possible, but not typical for windows machines of the same age in my experience. Just my 2c ...

  • Amazon & Google mend fences, bring YouTube back to Fire TV streamers

I'm likely an idiot, but I can't figure out why anyone would buy a special purpose device like a game device or a TV streaming device when a general purpose device like a real computer can do pretty much everything a special purpose device can do. Extra devices mean more hardware to support, more software licenses to purchase and maintain, more wires to plug in, more electricity to use, more companies to submit my email address to, and just more grief that I don't want. Even worse, my ISPs contact me (like they did today) to try to get me to *rent* boxes to watch programs on. Rent! And those boxes remove my ability to modify the recorded programs later, just for example, maybe I want to make a GIF or JPG of my favourite TV actor to be my Avatar for some website. I can't do it with their hardware. People want to take my money on a monthly basis to remove my ability to do what I can already do with my general purpose computer.
How would you make a single PC/MAC work with multiple TV's in a home?  I used Appletv's in my home, there is minimal hardware support outside of updates and no software licenses to purchase? There is no monthly rental either.
