Apple will pause U.S. Apple Watch sales starting December 21
It looks like Masimo has appended the company’s contribution to the wikipedia entry for pulse oximetry-
“ In 1995, introduced Signal Extraction Technology (SET) that could measure accurately during patient motion and low perfusion by separating the arterial signal from the venous and other signals. Since then, pulse oximetry manufacturers have developed new algorithms to reduce some false alarms during motion, such as extending averaging times or freezing values on the screen, but they do not claim to measure changing conditions during motion and low perfusion. So there are still important differences in performance of pulse oximeters during challenging conditions.”
etc etc.
It looks like they have been improving the technology in terms of cardiac output via pulse variability and accuracy.
So perhaps there is a case here. -

I still don’t understand why an established well defined 50+ year old technology can lead to these decisions. We live in a time when cheap $20-30 pulse oximeters are readily available. Obviously none of these manufacturers are paying royalties to Masimo.
Of all the crazy patent claims why this one and not one of the previous patent fights??! -
GM ditching Apple CarPlay is about money, not safety
Agree, no CarPlay, no sale. Too bad because the Volt/Bolt options would have been something I would have looked at.
Cars are going to become a platform for software services in the future, thanks to Generation Z and their fixation on their phones and really to be fair, all of us.
The planet is going to brace the tsunami of cheap Chinese EV exports now that they have achieved the goal of over production so competition is going to be fierce in this space.
If they were smart they would embrace more cooperation with Apple not less.
We don’t know how much money is involved with their Google relationship but if they are paying Google in the relationship, it doesn’t bode well for them.
But I am sure the executives will fail upwards. -
iPhone 17 Pro will get TSMC's first 2nm chips
It seems that the TSMC pecking order for the cutting edge is-
1. Apple, now soaking up most (or all) of the 3nm production per multiple sources.
2. Nvidia, 4nm (per the FT). Good for their AI machinations.
3. Everyone else.
The 2nm should be a boon for computing efficiency and heat dissipation needed for AR/VR and Apple’s aspirations for consumer products. -
Sizing up Tim Cook's vision for an immersive wearable
DED, thanks for reminding me about the natural history of tech punditry! I keep forgetting about how wrong these oracles of wisdom profess to be. And yeah, why do we even listen to their nonsense?
I was listening to the song “Every Picture Tells s Story” this morning and thinking, yeah a LLM AI could never have conceived of this song…but tech pundits look at LLM and sees a force as uninspired as them.
