  • Review: macOS Catalina 10.15 is what Apple promised the Mac could be, and is a crucial upg...

Wow, I’ve been eager to see some in-depth articles that give a hands-on review of the major new features in Catalina. This article is extremely comprehensive and leaves no nuance, no matter how subtle, undiscovered. What I generally do with these full figured articles is to create a PDF of the article from Reader View in Safari and save it in iBooks as a book. I may not read it entirely from within the Apple Insider forum but I will eventually read it all as a book because I appreciate the time, effort, and commitment that went into creating it. It may be a bit heavy compared to the average article size we’re used to seeing on AI, but it’s still very relevant, well written, and informative even if it has to be consumed in bite sized chunks. Thank you DED.
Cicero already shouted 2000 years ago in the Roman senate:  "Quousque tandem Catalina abutere patentia nostra?" or "How long, Catalina, will you abuse our patience?"  That man had a great insight  :)

  • Apple's Cook addresses App Store monopoly, Apple TV+ launch, iPhone 11 in interview

How much did small app makers make before?

$0 if they didn't lose money on cancelled projects.

If Apple hadn't invented iPhone, most apps and developers wouldn't exist.
As an app developer I can say this Is BS.  Prior to the app store, I developed a lot of web applications and made a lot of money.  The App Store ecosystem just raised the expectations of the customers.  They are requesting, next to the web client for PC and Macs, a nice iOS app.

And in the 7 years I make iOS apps, the iOS business line is the least profitable one.   Not only do I lose the 30% cut, which is non existing for a web client, but the development and approval of an iOS app costs me roughly 2 to 3 times more than a plain web client.

  • Apple's appeal against $14.4B EU & Ireland tax payment is this week

Why bother, Apple? This is a done deal. You actually think you can talk the EU out of $15B? They’re drooling at the mouth to get their hands on that cash, most of which will wind up in their  own and their friends pockets. You worked out a deal with Ireland and years later the EU is now crying foul? How convenient for them.
You did not read the article.  In case the EU wins, Apple has to pay Ireland the 13.1 billion Euo, the EU is not getting a single eurocent.  I don't say that EU is without any sins, but your bashing here is pointless and off topic.

The case is not about taxes, it is about Ireland giving Apple an unfair competitive advantage, which is forbidden by European law.

  • iPhone 11: How Apple makes tech of the future affordable

It all depends on what you call affordable.  The iPhone 11 is indeed a great phone with a lot of value, but $699 remains a lot of money for a lot of users.

The other day I talked to the manager of the shop where I buy my smartphones and he said that there is a clear trend.  People which in the past bought high end smartphones (iPhiones and Android), are switching to the $300 models like the Samsung A50 or the Motorola One Vision.  These devices are not only good enough for 99% of the tasks, but these devices perform the requested tasks very smoothly.

Apple may be king in the high end market, but the relative importance of the high end is shrinking and the launch of iPhone 11 won't stop that.

  • Prominent Apple apps in App Store search results face more criticism

    mjtomlin said:

So?   That seems right to me:  If I am looking for an app -- say a spreadsheet program -- I will want to see what Apple has to offer more than anything else.
If someone is searching for a spreadsheet app the first one that should pop up is Excel.

Wrong! When you buy an iPhone and it says it comes with “Numbers” many people will search for it driving it up the list.
Don't take your preference as the standard for all Apple users.

There exists only one spreadsheet program in a professional environment and it is called Excel.   Numbers might look great but as a spreadsheet program it is just horribly limited.
