  • Facebook freezes hiring, blames iOS changes for reduced revenue growth

Because if profit rates slip from "obscene" down to merely "disgusting", folks will be piiiiiiiiiised.

  • Apple employees disgruntled over return to working in offices

Just weeding out the lame employees. Layoffs possibly incoming. No shortage of people wanting to work for apple.

What *IS* it about commenters feeling like they have to rush to the defense of the most valuable company that ever was and be stridently anti-worker about it?  There are tech labor shortages everywhere.  Apple hiring is notoriously picky.  Sure, people want to work for Apple. But *qualified* people?

While I was an owner, and employer, in businesses, I would prefer Apple take some of those tens of billions they’re throwing away in stock buybacks, and give their employees better compensation in various ways. I don’t like the way things have been going. It used to be one of the best places to work, but it’s quickly becoming repressive. There’s no need for that, Apple can afford to do anything required to meet employee expectations.
And just how is working for Apple becoming “repressive”? All we know about the situation what we read in biased news media reports. All we’ve been presented with are one sided accounts of alleged employee incidents because that’s what gets clicks. As for employee expectations what is expected by retail floor sales clerks? $80K paychecks, 20 minute breaks every hour? What? Respect is a two way street.

Human beings create the wealth of corporations.

  • Johny Srouji says the Apple Silicon strategy challenged Apple

    mcdave said:
Apple is far from established and is coming up light on its promises. It has a significant problem & it isn’t the ISA. Until product managers allow significant forks for macOS-specific frameworks (Accelerate & Metal/TBDR) and commit to UMA architecture, as Serif has, Apple Silicon will struggle to demonstrate its value.
It demands a mindset shift away from CPU OR GPU benchmarks to APU or Application benchmarks & preferably not those from an x86 vendor like Puget Systems.

What are you talking about?  Accelerate is tuned to each OS and each instance of hardware/chip. Metal and the Apple Silicon hardware have been codeveloped all along.

  • Workers at NYC Grand Central Apple Store start moving to unionize

“at will” employment skews all in favor of the corporations. And the larger the corp, the worse for the employees.  At will means they terminate you “because”. They can hide discrimination based on all those things that are supposed to be protected. They can and do force you to sign over all your rights to legal recourse in order to work for them. And don’t say you can always just “work somewhere else” because there is nowhere else that doesn’t also do the same bullsh*t.

Individuals get screwed in the name of “it’s just business”, but if any employee behaved towards a corp the same way, they’d get blackballed.
