  • Apple's weak Chinese iPhone sales blamed directly on high prices

Really? How much did the price of the Mac mini come down in the four years we waited for an update? How much has the price of a the cylinder Mac Pro come down since it hit the market five years ago?

I disagree that waiting is a viable solution to overcoming the high price of Apple products.

Honestly I probably would have bought more Apple stuff this year if it was more cost effective. I just can't justify the price with the way they price their stuff in Canada.
Apple is actually really good about pricing in Canada. Prices are almost always very close to the US Dollar equivalent after exchange, and sometimes even a little lower.

Contrast that against companies like Sony that force their regional distributors to be completely self-sufficient, resulting in the Canadian price of a receiver I was considering being 33% higher than the US price AFTER exchange.

EDIT: My intended point is only that prices in Canada are not any higher than they are in the USA. That doesn't speak to the issue of whether prices are too high overall.

  • Apple Sunnyvale office described as 'black site' with tenuous work conditions

Happy workers typically do good work (the odd lazy exception notwithstanding). Miserable workers typically do poor work, and the best people don't contribute anything at all because they quit. If the people working on Apple Maps are miserable, it's probably reasonable to expect the quality of Maps to suffer.

I understand there may be benefits on the bottom line to Apple relegating certain tasks to situations that are less than luxurious, but that should be balanced against the adverse effects negative product impressions have on that same bottom line. Despite improvements over the years, Maps still has the lingering stigma of being a second-rate product to overcome. Maybe it and Siri are not places where Apple should be cutting corners on making workers happy.

[...] Everyone has a higher moral standard for Apple. If this were Facebook or Google no one would give a shit.
Well, yeah. Facebook and Google make no claims of occupying the moral high ground. Apple does. It's part of Apple's marketing strategy. So yeah, of course people expect more from Apple, because Apple itself tells us we can.

  • iPhone replacement cycles slowing down to four years, pose threat to services, analyst say...

4 years replacement cycle sounds unreasonable. People go at most 2 1/2 to 3 years most.
The thing is, for me at least, there's no compelling reason to upgrade. Yes the screen is nicer, but it has reached the point of diminishing return. Yes the cameras are better, but my almost three year old SE still takes great shots. My SE still runs the latest iOS and gets all the features. I look at the iPhone XS and it is lovely, but I keep asking myself what it would give me that my SE doesn't. So far the hole in my bank account doesn't outweigh the improvements. Until the SE stops working, or at least won't do something I want it to do, I have no compelling reason to upgrade.
The SE's camera is pretty mediocre compared to what comes in the latest iPhones. OSS is amazing for video on my X. Screen real estate is certainly a big plus for me as well, I can't image having to read stuff on a 5" screen anymore.
Seems to work very well for me.

No one is saying that camera is bad, just that the new ones are even better. With the new one I can take that photo at dusk and not suffer as much of the graininess and noise the older camera produces. The higher resolution also allows me to crop further before things start getting pixelly at normal viewing size.
