  • Review: OWC ThunderBlade provides silent & fast Thunderbolt 3 storage

    Two questions:

    1. What mode was the drive in for the speed tests? I get roughly the same speed from a single M.2 drive. Seems like four of ‘em should be a lot faster.

    2. Is the power brick required to run the drive? Will the power from a Thunderbolt port on the MacBook Pro be enough to run the drive?

  • First look: Mac Pro and Apple Pro Display XDR [u]

I have no complaints about or objection to the new Mac Pro. It’s not what I want, but that doesn’t mean Apple made a mistake.

What I want is the same thing others have described — something between the mini and the Pro. It’s been six years since Apple told us we could work without PCIe cards and it’s still not true. A decent machine with an i9, four RAM slots, upgradable storage, and room for a couple PCIe cards would be very welcome.

The new Mac Pro is awesome. Hopefully Apple will also soon offer a Mac Worker Bee.

  • Apple finally kills vestigial Dashboard in macOS Catalina

I actually prefer to use Notification Centre rather than Dashboard, but have had to hang on to the latter because I can’t find a unit conversion widget for NC that’s anywhere near as good as the one in Dashboard. Third-party widgets don’t seem to include currency conversion, and It seems currency conversion is only offered by elaborate, dedicated widgets that are constantly updating, when all I need is to occasionally check “How much is that in Canadian?”
Use Spotlight. Hit cmd-space and type $6.66 and it'll show you CAD and a few others.

How can we continue to use Apple's Converter App (which converts lengths, currencies etc). It is really cool and easy to use.
    Calculator.app does conversions...
I hadn't uncovered either of these little gems. Thanks 1,000,000! Really helpful.

  • Apple is not deleting your iTunes or movie purchases, and it isn't getting out of media sa...

I have a question. I usually download my purchased movies so they will show along with my other movies I’ve ripped from my dvd collection onto iTunes to all show on one list. Problem here is my hard drive is full. Will the new setup show all of my purchased movies and personal ones together without having to download my purchased ones onto a hard drive? That would save me from having to buy a bigger HD Lol
iTunes already does what you’re asking about, so it seems likely the Apple TV App will too.

    BUT....

You should download your purchases to a  local storage device anyway. At least one movie I bought is no longer available from the iTunes Store. I didn’t download it so I’m now out of luck. It’s not the kind of thing that’s likely to happen very often, but better safe than sorry. Apple’s support page for the store stresses the importance of keeping a downloaded backup.

Since when was Mac Pro NOT for the top 1%?
It wasn’t until 2013. There were affordable versions of the cheese grater. I bought one for under CAD$2500 in 2008.

Even the cylinder was within reach of one-man shops and serious enthusiasts.

So, in response to your question, I’d say the Mac Pro became a product for the 1% on Monday June 3, 2019.
