  • Initial 2018 MacBook Air benchmarks show modest improvement over 2017 MacBook

[...] if the constraining factor is something else -- say communications to a cloud service -- it simply doesn't matter how fast the CPU is.
Excellent specific example. It's part of why I get so worked up about Apple's prices for internal storage. Why would I buy the fastest computer I can get if I'm going to be constrained to internet speeds to access my files? So I look for larger storage capacity than is available in a base model, which, to Apple's credit, is readily available, but at prices that make my pancreas pucker. If Apple wants me to buy powerful computers, it's going to have to reign in the price of storage upgrades.

Putting the complete package together for the intended customer has been where Apple has always excelled.  I think, with the Mac line, they fell behind the curve a bit.
It's confusing to see storage capacities steadily increasing in iPhones while they linger below bare minimum in Macs. That still hasn't been addressed.

  • Apple to reportedly unveil iPad Pro, MacBook Air replacement, Mac mini at Oct. 30 event

[...] Also one snagged USB-C cord and a $4k macbook pro flying off a desk is not something I would look forward to or consider a design 'upgrade'...
You're overestimating the gripping power of a USB-C connection. It pops out when the cord gets snagged. I speak from experience. I share my living space with dogs who like to chase each other around the house. They frequently gather up the power cord for my MBP as they race by, and it has never once dragged the computer off the table.

If anything, my complaint about the USB-C port is that the grip is too weak. After two years of use, my computer occasionally fails to charge overnight because bumping it can dislodge the cable just enough to disrupt power.

  • Apple TV 4K could be used by big UK cable firm as set-top box

This is kind of like Car Play, slowly inching more and more into being a really great, ready-made device for OEMs.  [...]  It makes far more sense for TV providers like this to use a well made, updated and maintained product like AppleTV and free themselves of the hassle of developing their own.
There are a few glaring problems with the Apple TV that I would want to see addressed before making it my primary viewing interface. In the interest of brevity I won't bother itemizing them again -- I've detailed the issues in other threads -- but will say that while we continue to use the Apple TV because the benefits outweigh its failings, I don't consider it a well-made or maintained product. The software is missing key functions and is not reliable.

  • Everything new in tvOS 12: Over 20 new features for Apple TV

The biggest gripes for me are the remote not being recognized until you swipe or press a button a few times and misplacing it.

We have eliminated those issues by using our phones instead. Plus it's a great way to force your significant other to go to bed by fast forwarding to the end of what they're watching.
    😂
Right, there's no "raise to wake" so once the remote goes to sleep it doesn't work again until you press a button.

My original response to the ATV remote was to dedicate an old iPhone to being a remote, but it's even worse than the ATV remote in terms of the time it takes to get from reaching for the remote to actually accomplishing a task -- wake phone, authenticate user, open app, press button.

I wish Apple would add the ability for Siri to be able to search content in my iTunes library.
Not just Siri -- even type-to-search ignores local content. It's frustrating as hell.

I'd also like the ATV to include my own content in the "Up Next" section of the TV app.

But I'd settle for just the damn thing keeping track of what I've watched and what I haven't, and stop constantly presenting episodes I've already seen in "Up Next."
