Apple's reason: strengthening ties with Chinese universities and businesses will help China see that its own success is tightly aligned with Apple's success. China won't hurt Apple if that means hurting itself. -

I think Apple's R&D around facial recognition is not for authentication, but rather for:- Gaming
- Augmented Reality
- Facetime
- ... etc.

A friend had to replace a Samsung Note 7 and considered Pixel Phone since it came out around the time of the Note 7 recall.
He did not buy the Pixel Phone: "No waterproofing, whereas I can get that with other phones."
I don't see Pixel Phone surviving any more than the recently cancelled Chromebook Pixel.
