  • Apple may be in talks with Meta to add another generative AI provider to iOS 18

Meta AI? Hard pass. The idea of having anything Zuckerberg is in control of powering the AI in my phone is creepy.
Understandable, BUT: Apple has already demonstrated how they will handle handing off user requests to third parties -- they will ask you if you want the request sent to <outside AI provider>, and you can say no. In the betas so far, this only occurs with one partner -- OpenAI's ChatGPT -- but they will likely add some additional partners. Apple put extra "guardrails" on the OpenAI handling of certain requests, and they are likely to impose the same restrictions on other partners.

The good news is that Meta is unlikely to agree to that, so this may be a non-story from the get-go.

But even if they did, they would just be a user choice to send their request to that service instead of OpenAI or Google or whatever other service complies with Apple's terms. IOW, the user is in control of this at all times.

  • Apple Intelligence & iPhone mirroring aren't coming to EU because of the DMA

That's what they get for telling an American company what to do...
Hell yeah! Why doesn’t every country just submit to anything Merka wants and bends over and takes it! YA-HOOO!

    LOL.

The EU has the right to create regulations as they see fit. Apple has the right to not include some features that would be compromised by EU mandates in the EU.

This is not a problem. One or more market and/or political forces will act to resolve this conflict, though that may take some time.

To be clear, I think that if Apple sincerely believes current EU mandates compromise user security, it should not offer those features in the EU. It’s not “punishment,” it’s part of the company’s core value to protect user security. I don’t think it has anything to do with Apple wanting to “punish” the EU — their money is just as good as anyone else’s.

If European users feel strongly enough that they want those features, they will reform the EU to allow companies like Apple and Microsoft (not you, Google) to prioritize user security and privacy. This may all take a long time, but a happy (or at least acceptable) medium will eventually be achieved.

  • Apple plans slimmest iPhone 17 & MacBook Pro designs following iPad Pro success

I only carry my phone when I’m traveling, and it’s been a harrowing experience. The battery seems to drain so quickly (see: range anxiety) and I’m constantly having to manage it. What I’d love more than anything: keep the damn phones the same thickness—or make them slightly thicker—and give me solid 18-hours of life.
They'd need to be LOT thicker and a LOT heavier to give you 18 hours of non-stop usage.

Take a look at the battery pack you probably (or should) have to keep your iPhone charged when you're away from power outlets. It's most likely to be considerably thicker and heavier than your iPhone, especially if you really need 18 hours (when do you sleep?) of "solid" (ie in-use) battery life. Now imagine slapping a screen on that battery and then the computer components on top of that, and that's the weight and thickness of your new iPhone.

It sounds to me like what really needs constant managing here is your phone addiction ...

  • Don't toss your Apple Watch away if you get a hard fall warning, like Steven Spielberg did...

This is related to one of my biggest gripes about all the emergency features on the Apple Watch and iPhone.  When you accidentally activate any of them in a hurry to cancel it and the way to cancel it is very subdued compared to the activate function. It can cause you to panic while trying to find the deactivate option before time runs out.  This could be changed ever so subtly so the X is much more apparent.
To be fair, my vision is still pretty good -- but the X on the illustration above looks pretty clear and large enough to easily tap to me.

You'll note also that the call function has to be *slid across the screen* in order to work. This is a deliberate design choice to prevent accidentally calling for help when you don't need it.

Also, a minute is quite a long time really. If you're okay, you shouldn't be panicking.

Finally, if for some reason the call does go through, you should stay on the line with emergency services and tell them you are okay. Do not hang up prematurely.

  • Activists rally at Apple Park for reinstatement of child safety features

If these folks are seriously concerned about preventing CSAM distribution, why aren’t they permanently encamped at Meta, Xitter, and Google’s headquarters?

I mean, if they are serious about trying to trample constitutional limits on the right to privacy and are pro-preemptive state searching without the presumption of innocence, they’d be much more likely to get further with those companies (who handle far more volume of cloud transportation of data than Apple anyway).
