  • Apple considering offline mode for Siri that could process voice locally on an iPhone

So, if you think Siri is stupid now, just wait.

Try asking Siri a very basic question, like "How old am I", or "When will I be 59 1/2 years old".  Siri will suggest websites; which is asinine.  Siri knows my birthday, anniversary, the birthday of my kids, friends and neighbors (as long as I have the information in my contacts); but is unable to use that date, and a calendar to answer very basic questions.  Voice recognition on Siri has improved - but Siri's ability to do anything useful with that information is almost 5 years behind both Google, and Amazon - which is pathetic - since Apple practically invented a useful Virtual Assistant.

Now, between Cortana, Echo and Google Echo - Siri is pretty much a dead last competitor; when it should be the BEST - by far.
Bogus. Siri tells me how old I am just fine. So did you just make that up?

I do not believe Google and Amazon’s assistants are five years more advanced, either. Articles I’ve read peg them each at different but comparable levels of suckitutde.

What’s your excuse for Siri trying to take me to Canterbury New Zealand when I am 20 miles from Canterbury, UK, then saying “sorry I can’t get directions to there”? It’s really crap.
That's a Maps issue, Siri is just passing along the poor results given to it by Maps.

  • Apple fixes Apple Watch rings issue with watchOS 5.0.1 update

The stand functionality has been a mess for a long time, and it's still not fixed even with this update.  It's supposed to credit a stand after one minute of activity, but I can sometimes move for five minutes including climbing three flights of stairs and no credit.  Same issue with the series 2, 3, 4, and every WatchOS version.
Out of curiosity, are you using the hand your watch is on for anything else during that time? To the point where potentially your hand isn’t making the normal movements it would make when walking? I used to carry an iPad around quite frequently for work and noticed that sometimes I would get the Stand reminder even though I had been up and moving. I realized that maybe my had wasn’t moving enough to register and when I put the iPad down and moved “normally” I would quickly get the Stand credit.

*Keep in mind, it’s “Stand and move”. I know plenty of people who get upset that they can’t just stand up at their desk, unmoving, for 1 minute and get credit. That’s not how it works.

  • Apple Watch Series 4 has 10 features that set it apart from your older model

I will still stick to series 3 Hermes. First of all, I am all Hermes watch faces. So if/when I am gonna get it, it will always be Hermes edition. I love the new faces but paying another almost 2K is a bit a lot for something that will be obsolete in 11 months time.
I’m curious, how do the Hermes watches hold up for resale? My Series 0 Stainless Steel Space Black with Link Bracelet is only good for about $25. That’s on a watch that just 3 1/2 years ago retailed for $1100 (I think, maybe it was a little more). I like it and will continue to use it until it’s no longer useful. I mostly only wear it when I’m going out to dinner or somewhere that requires nicer attire. It still looks good but now that it isn’t getting OS upgrades and the battery life is shortening I’m not sure how much longer it will last...

  • Hands on: 44mm Space Gray Apple Watch Series 4

I'm hearing that the Series 4 Watch will now connect to automobile BT for handsfree access and pushing AirPlay audio streams.
I’ll have to try. Just last week I was trying to connect my Series 3, it was detected but would fail over and over. I tried restarting my Watch, the system in the car, turning off Bluetooth and then back on, etc., and nothing worked. When I actually get out of bed today I’ll give it a shit and report back.

Side question on watchOS 5: raise to Siri seems to work well but I haven’t been able to get HomeKit commands to work. I can get “send a message...” or “call ‘xxx’” to work but “turn on {whatever} lights” results in the watch face just staring back at me. Anyone else?

  • AppleCare+ adds theft and loss protection for iPhone, starts at $14.99 per month

Hmmm... There's a risk that someone who has screen damage will think...

Should I pay $99 and get a new screen, or chuck the whole works into the garbage and get a brand new phone for $269? There is, after all, some advantage to having a phone that hasn't had its innards touched by a repair person.

My new XS Max should be careful about showing signs of breakage. Broken screen = death by wood chipper
Except you likely won’t get a brand new, in-the-box iPhone. You’ll get one of the newly manufactured phones that likely have already been taken in on a previous repair. Apple says they’re like new and tested the same but there’s a good chance it’s innards have been touched by a repair person.
