  • Video: The fastest way to unlock your iPhone X with Face ID

    Bluerider said:
Can anyone please tell how does the FaceID work if the iPhone is fixed in a car holder not pointing directly at the driver?
Of course it can't be pointed away from you, since it projects and scans dots. But it has a decent spread. Just tested the angle at which it works with the selfie camera.

I held the phone to the side and a decent length away from my face to simulate where the phone holder would be affixed.

I then turned on the selfie camera and set the angle to cut off my face completely, only showing my ear, and it unlocked.

Afterwards, I changed the angle to completely cut my head off and it didn't unlock.

So you can place your current iPhone (if you have one) on your phone holder in the car, and turn on the selfie camera. If you can at least see your ear, you should be fine.
That’s good to know.  I have also held my iPhone below shoulder height and off to my right side but facing toward me.  I was looking straight ahead but could see my iPhone peripherally.  It successfully unlocked for me when I just moved my eyes to see the phone, I didn’t turn my head.

  • Apple AR headset codenamed 'T288' said to run new 'rOS' operating system, launch as soon a...

    2) You can't have AR without a camera, but as we saw with Google Glass a camera just makes it creepy. Can Apple overcome that stigma?
Is this actually true?  Couldn’t many of the things that are shown using AR be done without a camera?  Granted, on an iPhone/iPad the camera is required to see put, say, my kitchen table, on the screen.  But if I was wearing glasses couldn’t the AR information just be projected onto the lens that I’m already looking through?

How much of what we currently view as AR relies on the camera for reasons other than showing what we can already see with our own eyes?  It seems to me that the other sensors are doing most of the AR work.  The camera is just there to supply an image.  Right?  So, couldn’t the camera potentially be eliminated while the other sensors still do their jobs in the same fashion?

  • How to use and train Apple's Siri for Messages, Calendar, and iTunes Music on your iPhone

    hcrefugee said:
One of the most obvious uses of Siri is in a moving car...Responding, and finding Messages is simple. The best way to hear all of your new messages is simply to ask Siri to Read my new messages. You can interrupt the stream by saying Read it again, where "it" is the last message you just heard.

I would like is a voice cmd to override, "You must unlock your iPhone first" when I ask Siri to read a new msg while driving.

I send messages via Siri while driving all the time and do not have to unlock my iPhone first.  Go to Settings>Siri & Search and turn on Allow Siri When Locked.

  • Apple urges iPhone Upgrade Program members to get 'head start' on iPhone X order process

    kubeltime said:
I am probably having a similar issue, I am a part of thr upgrade program but never received an email about today.. when I log in to the store it does show that I am eligible for an upgrade but when I get to the part to select a device it only lets me select the 8 and the X is greyed out.
    Yeah, Mike, same for me.

I’m not really sure if there is an issue with the Apple Store app, if it’s something on Apple’s end or if I’m just not seeing something I’m supposed to.  The app tells me I’m upgrade eligible but under “Which iPhone would you like?” iPhone X is grayed out and says “Pre-order on 10.27”.  Just like it did 2 weeks ago.
I just chatted with Apple Customer Service. They said "Theres this small bug in the system thats not allowing us to get that pre approval done but don’t worry, the tech guys are working on it now. I recommend checking back in, in another 2 hours on that Apple App on the iPhone."
    It’s working now.

  • NAB calls for activation of iPhone FM radio feature Apple says does not exist

    wood1208 said:
Instead of FM, everyone should ask Apple to add a feature in Settings call iClean or iClean User Credentials or whatever you want to name. What it does is, It totally removes any association/reference of the device from current and any prior ownership. Means, it removes references from everywhere, iCloud, passcode/touchid, iTune login, manage applid from authentication server and than resets it. It still asks for current user's appleid/password to initiate the feature.
    ...
But, Apple will not provide such feature.
Wow, you are way off topic. But, unless I’m not following you, this is absolutely possible. Go into Setting>your name>iCloud>Find My iPhone and turn off FMi. This requires your AppleID password. Back out to the top level of Settings, go to General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings (you may need to enter your passcode). Viola! You’re done. Hand the iPhone (or whatever iOS device) to its new owner and they will have no issues.

Back on topic, occasionally I hear people mention how great it would be to be able to listen to “live radio” on a phone. Personally I don’t see the appeal. I feel like it’s a feature that would be used as much as having a TV tuner so we could watch local stations. Again, no thanks. As mentioned above, how many people did FM radio help during these recent natural disasters?

But overall, whatever. If Apple decides to add an FM tuner to my next iPhone will it negatively affect me? Likely not. And it doesn’t mean I have to use it.
