  • GM ditching CarPlay & Android Auto for Google-built infotainment system

From my very first vehicle in 1994 (84 ElCamino) up to my 2001 Blazer Xtreme, I was a die hard Chevy fan. But was getting annoyed with them because they weren't adding any new technology features in any of their new cars. No iPod connections, no Bluetooth, no HID or LED lighting (they had the worst functioning headlights, flashlights would have worked better) dollar store speakers and still...STILL a 4 speed transmission. All the cool stuff the imports were putting in their vehicles, GM seemingly refused to do the same. It was like management was well over 100 years old.

So when I needed a new vehicle in 2012 because, why else, the engine died at 97,000 miles, exactly at the time when my credit was at it's lowest, all I could get approved for was a returned 2012 Kia Soul with 24,000 miles on it already at a very high interest rate. All my domestic car loving friends tried to keep me from "turning to the dark side." LOL But that little Kia turned out to be THE BEST car I've ever owned. I could actually see at night thanks to their current century optics, I had an iPod connection and Bluetooth. Much better sounding speakers WITH bass. Six speed transmission and the red dashboard lighting was a nice touch instead of the boring white and blue in all my Chevy's. Doors closed with a promising thud and made great seals, as opposed to Chevy which all had cheap sounding latches and always leaked. And the interior panels!! UGH! I literally had rags stuffed in every one just to keep them from rattling. I wish I making that up. They were most annoying while idle at a stoplight. The build quality was just horrendous! How did these things make it off the assembly line like that? More concerning, what the hell did I ever see in them?

But not one problem with the Kia. So I had no problem trading it in with 137,000 miles on it (had a girlfriend with two young kids, lots of vacations) for a brand new 2017 Soul. But there was nothing wrong with it! The 17's Alien Green abducted me ;) Both of them have been solid with no issues whatsoever. Never needed anything except regular maintenance. My Chevy's were ALWAYS in the shop.

I love you, America, but yea, I think I'll stick with the "dark side" on this one because they just make better cars than you.

  • Apple Fellow Phil Schiller quits Twitter

If more Apple execs leave Twitter, I'm leaving, too. The only reason I've been on there since 2011, other than to keep up to date with various Apple execs, was to stay on top of Apple tech content and writers, a handful of tech journalists and news sites and a few various other accounts. There was usually no other useful content on there. Most of my personal friends left many, many years ago LOL I'm talking if you look at their account, their last post was in 2013!! They always ask why I'm still on there. It was bearable, but things have certainly taken a turn for the worse since Elon's takeover.

  • iPhone 14 Pro review: The best power & camera to cost balance

I'm not expecting to be able to use the always-on display. I went through such an aggravating time with my phone calling my emergency contact while mowing my lawn. I tried a few different things before finally deleting my emergency contact information. Then, after a month, I decided to add the emergency contact back in and try one final idea. I turned off both the raise to wake and tap to wake features. Bingo. No more inadvertent calls to my emergency contact. But now I have to actually press the sleep/wake button in order to turn on my phone. But for me it's worth it to avoid all of the aggravation with inadvertent calls. It seems like it must be only happening to me because I never hear complaints about it.
I never had a problem with butt dialing people, but I still hate raise and tap to wake. I don’t remember which phone had it first, but it was on by default. I figured it would be an unnecessary battery drain, but thought I’d give it a chance anyway. I quickly got annoyed with it cause every little movement would trigger it and light up the screen. Taking it out of my pocket to set it down or pick it up to move it from one place to another would make the screen light up. More times than I can count, the way I took it out of my pocket, I guess my thumb would swipe up a little and FaceID works so good and so fast that it would actually unlock my phone. So I’d have to lock it again. Very, VERY annoying. Plus, I have a watch, as I’m sure 90% of iPhone users do, so I don’t need to tap my screen to check the time.

And as a plus for turning it off, exactly as I imagined, I saw a big improvement on battery drain. One doesn’t realize how many times that screen unknowingly lights up throughout the day because it registers a raise or a tap. I also hate absurd amounts of notifications, so only the most important apps have permissions to do so. That also helps with battery drain.

So needless to say, I will NOT be using always on display, either when I do finally upgrade. Probably won’t be til next year. I’ve had Androids in the past that had the feature and I always turned it off.

  • T-Mobile users angered by iPhone 14 preorder failures

    Appleish said:
Boy. I remember when I used to buy from the carrier, while Apple was still having growing pains. People on Twitter would be screaming into the void about Apple, while I would be sipping on coffee and relaxing. One year, famously, Verizon started selling the new iPhone a half-hour early. I bought that time from them. Got my order in 15 minutes before Apple started choking on the hour.

These days I order from the Apple Store app. Been a breeze the last few cycles including this week.

    Sip... Ahhh...
Same here. Twitter blowing up about preordering issues with the Apple app while I was sipping my coffee and relaxing, too cause I went through the AT&T app. Always got my phone delivered early AM on release day. I would always ask for that Friday off work so I could be home for the delivery and then have the entire weekend to play with the new phone. Only once I went to the Apple Store to wait overnight in line. That was for the 5S.

I miss those days. I miss those phones, too. I’m so tempted to buy the SE3 cause I’m tired of carrying around bricks for the last 8 years. I stopped at the 11. It’s still a great phone, but it’s just too bulky. Plus, as I’ve gotten older, (and after that $1500 512GB 11 Pro Max sticker shock) my voice of reason has taken over LOL I no longer feel the need to buy their latest and greatest, most expensive model. I’ll either go with the SE or a 6.1” non-Pro numbered model. Most likely the 12 cause it comes in green, it’s cheaper than it was just 3 days ago, the 14 is <yawn> and I hate those diagonal cameras. Gross! I can only imagine Jony’s reaction when he saw that one. And Steve was probably calling someone a f***ing moron from his grave. I’d have to agree. “That’s s**t! Don’t ever show me that again!” Hahaha

  • Steve Jobs' turtleneck designer Issey Miyake dies aged 84

I loved that turtleneck he wore. It fit his persona perfectly. I’ve been a huge long time fan of his mens cologne. RIP Mr Miyake. He lived a long life.
