  • iPhone X impresses Windows executive, Android fans but bitter bloggers still hating

I was waiting for X but might go for 8 here are my 4 main concerns: 1. that no bezel makes it difficult to handle without touching screen [iPad 10.5 issue] 2. have heard problems about battery life despite it being bigger than the iPhone 8 3. is it really worth 20% more than an 8 when it is already redundant 4. wearing glasses I like touch ID and might not want to trade it for face recognition where you have to lift the phone in front of your face every time you switch on [biggest concern]
Most of those concerns seem to be misconceptions.
Only going for the 8+ could fix the "battery issue" cause any phone its size will have less battery.
You don't have to lift the phone yet you repeat a "meme"... You are misinformed.

  • Delta allegedly switching flight crew hardware from Surface to iPad in early 2018

And the Airline I fly for is replacing IPads with Surface Pros.
The critical information, they say, needs constant compatibility checks every time iOS gets even a minor update, still on IOS 10 because of that, we unfortunately do weight and balance, passenger boarding and other ‘ancillary’ things as well as Jepps and integrated MMEL, not sure which direction this ‘step’ is......

The comment about "constant compatibility checks every tiem IOS gets a minor update" is pure utter bullshit and I've used every API on just every platform known to man, from mainframes IBM/CISC, VAX/VMS in the early 1980s  to IOS/Android/Windows and all modern Unix variants in the last 35 years.

Considering how ridiculously lightweight, and removed from hardware, those apps/functions would be for Ipad, makes the whole argument absurd unless litteral idiots programmed those systems (which may be the case for all I know...).

Seems like someone wanted to switch and pulled something out of their ass to justify it.

  • Apple's iPad Pro to gain Face ID with TrueDepth camera in 2018 - report

    mretondo said:
Face ID only allows one face to be registered where Touch ID allows many. that is, my wife and kids. The iPad is a device commonly used by many members of the house hold. But now all users except me must know the password to use it. How is this a step forward?
That's how it is right now,  in a newly launched device, doing something new, there is a decent chance it might be different eventually.
I myself never use touch ID on an Ipad, this would have more use for me in Apple Pay or the like.

  • Three more reports of swollen batteries in iPhone 8 Plus surface, still not statistically ...

Just out of curiosity, was the number of failures for the Galaxy Note 8 'statistically significant?' I'm also curious if the battery supplier for the iPhone 8 is the same as the iPhone 7. Since the mechanical designs are virtually identical and the batteries are close to the same size, it seems like we would have seen similar reports with the iPhone 7. Of course, that's assuming there's not reporting bias, which is a big assumption. Even if the incidence is within the range of expected failure, public perception is far from rational
Note 7 statistically significant: 1 in 20,000 conservatively. Probably closer to 1 in 15,000.

Battery supplier: Doesn't look like it.

Mechanical design: Nope. Many differences. Similar battery size, but similar size does not equal the same size or the same issues.

Similar reports with the iPhone 7: We did.

Reporting bias: The five who have had the problem posted. The 20 million+ who haven't, didn't.

Agree with public perception -- thus the explanation of what an infant failure is.
Were there any reports of battery problems with the iPhone 7 or 7Plus?    I don't remember any.
Of course there weren't any announcement on airplanes about not having an iPhone 7.
They were too distracted by the X gate... The reason you hear about it this year is because of what happened to the Note last year and well, it is Apple and they have to latch on to some doom narrative, they just gotta.

  • iPhone X report shows device with less environmental impact than any other Apple product

I like their environmental goals, but this part

    "
The battery itself is mercury-, lead- and cadmium-free. According to the report, it is designed to deliver up to 500 full charge and discharge cycles before it depletes to 80 percent of its original capacity."

    Is still my sore spot.

Why can the Macbook Pro and iPad, down to the Apple Watch, all get 1000 charge cycle batteries, while the iPhone, their single biggest seller, is still at 500? Clearly it can scale up and down from the Watch to the rMBP 15...
Not even sure were they got the 500, seemed like it was 800 a few years ago (or maybe its 800 before hitting 70%, the decline is not linear). Depends on operating conditions and recharge. Maybe it gives you 500 if you use fast charge for example and much more if you use the normal charger.

Most people don't do full 0 to 100% charge,s if instead you charge your phone when it is at 20-30%, you'd get 800 cycles easy, if you always keep the battery between 20-80% (taking it off the charger before its full) and never use battery intensive apps when its on the charger at 100%, you'd likely get well over 1200 charge cycles (nearly 4 years).   That explains why Ipads batteries tend to last a lot longer than Iphone batteries. They get a lot less deep discharges than Iphones (from my own experience),
