  • Apple's Services penetration isn't high despite years of growth

The figure of 4% may not be incorrect.  Over the years for my family and me I have probably bought approaching 50 iPhones and iPads.  However, none has been bought from Apple. I buy from my mobile operator which offers 0% finance and on occasion, a price cheaper than Apple. I don’t buy Apple Care for any of those products as they are insured anyway and none has ever been lost, stolen, broken or had any failure. As each device becomes older it is sold on.  I also have Apple TV, HomePods, Apple Pencil, Apple Watch and Mac Books of various sorts all of which have no cover.  Most never leave the house and have suffered no damage, loss, etc.

  • Apple chipmaking stumbles led to less impressive iPhone 14 Pro

I wonder if this is due to Apple laziness, perhaps because of staff working from home and not in the office, with far greater interaction.  I have noticed what I perceive to be lazy programming with beta software updates.  Basic features such as phone calls or text messages don’t work and almost every app on my watch has failed at some point during the last round of updates.  Even things corrected by the public version now don’t work again.

  • Apple releases third public beta for iOS 16, iPadOS 16, tvOS 16, watchOS 9, macOS Ventura

I hope Apple has improved battery drain from the previous version!

  • Apple pulled a record 439K apps in Q2, including abandonware

It is a shame when apps are not updated and won’t work on newer OSs. I do, though, see the reasoning. More frustrating is when an app changes developer and has to be paid for again (which I won’t do).

On one other point, I don’t think Apple can be considered a monopoly. There are a number of alternatives.  However, it is entirely fair if Apple controls the content and operation of software run on its hardware.  Apple hardware and software combined are far more secure than, say, MS operating systems because hardware and software are integrated.  If developers are allowed a free-for-all the security will be compromised.  If a developer wants to run its app on an Apple device it should (a) tie in with Apple infrastructure and (b) pay Apple for the ability to do so.

  • Happy birthday to Siri, the first and most frustrating voice assistant

I am pleased other folks have problems with Siri. I find I say ‘Hey, Siri’ and end up
with all my five devices answering, unless I put all but one well away. My HomePod via Siri often can’t find music in my library, even though it is either bought from iTunes or streamed from Apple Music. I also get Siri talking to me when I haven’t called him up. Basically, Siri is a complete waste of time, it’s quicker not to bother.
