Revamped icons hint at 'iOS 15' app redesign
Hideous if you ask me. It’s like when I turned on all layer effects as a youngster discovering Photoshop’s layer capabilities, thinking it looked so cool and impressive. There’s absolutely nothing serene about it. Its just eye clutter to me. It’s a bit like what that battery graphics in Mac OS 11’s battery settings screen looked like when it was first announced (is it still hideous? I haven’t updated.) Border AND embossed AND aqua reflective AND massive drop shadow AND text on top. I think the current flat design with a hint of gradient is contributing to a very serene, decluttered experience. Would be sad to see it go in this direction. I’ve seen more cluttered icons showing up lately in Pages, Numbers, Keynote and Final Cut Pro on Mac OS..
The only thing that could validate this (in my opinion) terrible design, is if they’re readying icons to be truly 3D, ready for VR and AR. It’d make sense to show off 3D for a first generation, before maturing and bringing it to a more serene design again. -
Toyota president tells Apple to prepare for the long-haul with 'Apple Car'
I think it was a great statement. Welcoming change, and telling them to also learn from their seniors when it comes to something very important, to help them avoid chaos down the line. Imagine the network of Apple Car certified repair shops around the world. It needs to be vast! Apple will probably try to engineer the vehicle(s) so that minimal service is required. I've heard from a few Tesla owners that they're pretty frustrated with Tesla's service experience over here in Norway. They often need service. Perhaps due to our climate here? But there's they're always in for weeks to months of waiting time. Whether it's because Teslas need more service, or there are too few repair shops, I don't know. Perhaps a bit of both? -

'Apple Glass' may use Look Around-style smooth navigation motion
Image noise and compositing is probably much more about VR. In AR it will more likely be composited against the real world as you see it with your naked eyes through the transparent glasses, and not as seen through a noisy camera. Although compositing the virtually rendered image into the true real world will still be a challenge to get natural, probably even more so, but very different (I'd say) than what's being described here. The difference between seeing a real reflective material and an image generated by some sort of in-glasses-screen that is emitting light right at you, and get the virtual image to match brightness, shading, ambient lighting and reflections, and also track at a high enough frame rate (I'm pretty sure 120fps enough), and taking into account lighting, whether it's being rendered against a backlit source, in the shade, far away, in a haze, a clear day etc. The dynamic range of the display technology must be great in the glasses, and must be read and adapted correctly at all times.Having tried the Magic Leap AR headset, where everything looks like transparent virtual ghosts, if one really want to nail it, there is so much more work to do. I thought the reports were that Apple's AR glasses were not even using cameras (for privacy concerns?) and would hence not be able to gather information about colours and lighting etc, used for compositing correctly? In any case. Stoked about this AR project. Very curious of where it's going!
