Should you wait for Apple Silicon to upgrade to a new Mac?
The current top model MacBook Pro looks to be performing amazing. They'll be great for years. I think the bottom line is whether the software and hardware compatibility you need works or not.
When Apple is releasing a new operating system it's often creating a half year long void and wait for the developers in the music, synth and audio industry (which I'm in) to catch up with stable drivers, because of Apple changing around a lot of stuff. Also a cat-and-mouse game where developers are waiting for Apple to acknowledge new bugs, or creating drivers that work around them. Now with a completely new hardware, I would very much assume there to be similar challenges… Just more.
For what I'm doing, I would probably need to wait and see… perhaps one, or even two years down the line unfortunately? -
Apple surveying users about iPhone AC adapters amid rumors they'll be sold separately
I like the idea of slim packaging. But a charging cable and/ or charger should be very simple to add onto the order. Just a configuration selection.
By the way, I think 2-4-port USB-C chargers should be standard. I’m trying out a Hyperjuice 100W 4-port charger at the moment. It’s not perfect, but I can use that one charger and cover all my charging needs, in a size similar to a regular MacBook Pro charger. Apple should offer something like that. There’s an awful number of devices needing to be charged. -
Apple reportedly evaluating Apple Silicon-powered macOS on iPhone
A little weird.. but because they now can do this, they will try it out. Eventually, when the Mac experience isn’t hampered with, they might even do it? Also if the phone has USB4, expansion might be pretty decent. But given that the developer transition kit used 16 GB ram, perhaps that could be seen as a minimum?
in any case, the next Mac Mini (if there’ll be such a thing) might come in Apple TV form factor? -
ARM iMac, 13-inch MacBook Pro coming at end of 2020, says Ming-Chi Kuo
I’m excited about the hardware transition, but worried about the software transition. Some pro software will take many years to transition. Some software houses might possibly even throw in the towel.I really hope Apple is showing a very convenient, flexible and scalable way to compile for ARM macs. -
Apple transition to own ARM chips in Macs rumored to start at WWDC
It’ll be interesting to see how Apple is scaling their ARM processors. Like... will there be more cores, or processors working in pairs, quad arrangements etc. Will there be integrated Thunderbolt 3, like on the Intel motherboards. What memory will they be using? How will an A processor fair with 32GB of RAM with a much higher level of multitasking typically done on a computer. How will it tackle demanding software such as 4K video editing and compositing, 3D modelling and rendering...
Better power efficiency, smaller size, and “controlling the whole chain” aside... if Apple can’t stand there at a keynote and say it’s 10x faster than their previous processors, I don’t think they would do it. There’s gotta be a motivation for the users in it too.
I’m looking forward to a really powerful new era.
