Revamped icons hint at 'iOS 15' app redesign
Hideous if you ask me. It’s like when I turned on all layer effects as a youngster discovering Photoshop’s layer capabilities, thinking it looked so cool and impressive. There’s absolutely nothing serene about it. Its just eye clutter to me. It’s a bit like what that battery graphics in Mac OS 11’s battery settings screen looked like when it was first announced (is it still hideous? I haven’t updated.) Border AND embossed AND aqua reflective AND massive drop shadow AND text on top. I think the current flat design with a hint of gradient is contributing to a very serene, decluttered experience. Would be sad to see it go in this direction. I’ve seen more cluttered icons showing up lately in Pages, Numbers, Keynote and Final Cut Pro on Mac OS..
The only thing that could validate this (in my opinion) terrible design, is if they’re readying icons to be truly 3D, ready for VR and AR. It’d make sense to show off 3D for a first generation, before maturing and bringing it to a more serene design again. -
How to get more speed and features out of Safari on Mac and iOS
I’m shocked at how much higher YouTube has chosen to drive the video quality in Chrome vs Safari using their proprietary VP9. They’re even throttling down video quality in h264 it seems. I wish they just went ahead and supported h.265, or at least made VP9 available for all.
Developers also claim Chrome has much higher compatibility and fewer formatting bugs than Safari. Since web is Google’s number one business arena, they’re probably using more resources and care deeply about it. Apple doesn’t seem to care about being in the forefront of browsers. Why don’t they address formatting errors in an ongoing effort? Beats me..
Apple seem to care more about the experience, privacy and the overall feel. I much prefer Safari, but having seen the video quality in YouTube in Chrome, it’s clear to me that at least when watching YouTube I might be Chroming in the future. -
Apple loses court battle over 'counterfeit' iPhone parts in Norway
Older phones like the iPhone 6 are out of warranty anyway. Cut us some slack, Apple, and let us repair them. It takes 30 minutes at a service place, like the one in the article, and often weeks dealing with Apple, and don't have a certified Apple service in town, at twice the cost. Instead of trying to prevent competition, compete!
My ear speaker on my iPhone 6+ has diminished in quality and volume over the years, be it dirt or decline in quality, I don't know. A service place like this can replace the component with a higher volume output in 30 minutes and it'll cost me the equivalence of $65 (in Norway). It's great service. -
Inside iPhone 8: Apple's A11 Bionic introduces 5 new custom silicon engines
Today I've been recording in the new High Efficiency mode on my iPad Pro 10.5", and then played back the files on the Mac (Mac OS 10.12.6). First of all, QuickTime Player plays the files fine. It looks good. But QuickTime Player says it's h.264. Is this just wrong, or is Apple's "High Efficiency" something else than HEVC (which i was under the impression was h.265). Has HEVC moved into the h.264 standard?
Also, these High Efficiency recordings do not play back very well on my iPhone 6 plus. They play, but very choppy. Even the 1080 ones. Either iOS 11 optimisations for older phones is needed, or it's just the nature of the new algorithms.. Too heavy for iPhone 6. -
