Because Orange does not own the street. See how that works. Orange has a choice. They could decide not to build out the fibre, but perhaps they find it acceptable to play by the government rules. Same thing with Apple and its customers. The customer can decide not to purchase an iPhone but most decide it is acceptable and perhaps even advantageous to play by Apple's rules.

At first it was thought that these related CPU exploits had to be running locally which would be pretty easy to avoid - just don't download any dodgy apps. Then it was discovered that Javascript in a web page could also be a vector. Javascript is such a ubiquitous programing platform that most modern sites will not even work without it. Back in the 90s security experts were saying to turn off Javascript but now days that is impossible if you actually want to use the internet.

Hopefully modern browsers will eventually be able to detect a compromised site before the code actually loads in your browser and stop executing the the web page with a warning.

This surprises me. I thought after the Apple v. Appleinsider and Kasper Jade lawsuit back in the early 2000s that there was no ongoing communication between the two parties.
