  • What history teaches about Apple's windows of opportunity for 2017

This rant about why Apple selling a lot of phones should make Mac users happy... well... no. Selling phones is not going to improve the focus, features, or quality of macOS or the computers we use as our main tool for work. It is even worse than demanding for Newton users to be happy about the success Apple had after abandoning their platform.

Looking forward we should expect to see the App Store being unlocked by legislation. It will allow for Google to jump in and offer developers a shared app space for Android + iOS making it free for users to swap platforms like on Steam.

Will Apple stay on the current path by keeping the cold Metal-Thin design language from 2001? By removing every little touch of humanism from macOS? By having a CEO that is using every chance to break his own record for most frequent use of "thrilled" and "profound" in a keynote? And will we still care?
Unlock AppStore with legislation? Not sure what you're referring to here but that would be an unprecedented overreach of gov't and incredibly anti-business - both of which unlikely under a Republican administration or middle of the ground Democratic one (like we've had since '92). I think what you're referring to is ant-trust. Problem is Apple isn't the largest player by market share in mobile - that belongs to Android. Apple is just more profitable which is more to do with hardware sales and the quality of apps on their platform. Also AppStore is already relatively open. Developers are free to develop apps for iOS as they are for Android, and most major app developers (Google included) already do this. Anyone using Google Apps on iOS can easily switch to the same app on Android. If anything it is harder to develop apps for Android given the number of active versions.

  • Android creator Andy Rubin plans AI-equipped smartphone with edge-to-edge display, ceramic...

Apple customers, especially those ties into the ecosystem are pretty loyal. Ninety nine percent of sales of this device will be former android users.

    did i mention they ugly?

    WRONG.

Dumb ass tech media is wrong again.
    What surprise.

Bought my Airpods and loving it. Tim cook totally nailed it.
Dumb ass tech media? How about the dumb ass trolls and naysayers right here on AI?
Or android users. I just had one tell me Airpods are only selling because they "come with the new iPhone".

You cant make up android stupidity.

Probably the same guy who thought the Affordable Care Act was a competing program to Obamacare

  • Peter Thiel says 'age of Apple' at its end

It seems it is Thiel, not Apple that has reached the zienth of their respective relevance. His political philosophies and ties to the incoming administration will make him a pariah.

Presumably this is due to few watches being sold at these locations. I've seen I think two other Apple watches in the wild. My Series 1 watch is good - I miss it if I forget it - but it certainly isn't essential. It has numerous problems: It's generally a bit slow, and the heart monitor is pretty poor. It's slow to detect a pulse and often just wrong, I've had heart rates as low as 35 registered.

Siri is slow too. Frequently displaying "I'll tap you when I'm ready", then either never tapping or ending up cancelling the request altogether because I lower my arm, which is downright annoying. It looks ridiculous as I have to walk around holding my arm up until Siri finally processes. This brings me to another point with Siri: why the hell aren't more requests processed directly on the phone/watch?! I had ViaVoice doing recognition on a 200mhz PPC603, I'm sure a 700mhz ARM CPU can handle it.

Third party apps are still slow and often unresponsive too, even though the UI responds to touches.

FitBits auto-detect activities, why do I have to manually start them with the Apple Watch?

It is great for notifications and replying with short responses, and for changing music tracks. The complications are really useful too, as is the Apple Pay capability. But when people ask me what I like about it, or to show me what it can do, sadly I quickly run out of things to say or show.
Not sure where you're located but I see multiple daily in and around the SF Bay Area and when visiting family in the Midwest. The high end retail locations no longer make sense, especially since Apple has pivoted away from the luxury/Apple Watch edition strategy. Data and Apple's own marketing suggest sport and aluminum models are what's selling. This move makes total sense.
