  • Apple's headset will need killer apps & services to be successful

Come on, let's be real - what "killer app" can you imagine that would convince you to part with $3,000?   I can't even think of many use cases outside of gaming for a dorky *headset* - much less a "killer app".   Even if there was a killer VR game that was introduced alongside the headset - how long could one game possibly keep you engaged?  Long enough to make worthwhile investing $3,000?

•Well I can think of a few dozen medical ones alone. Imagine doing invasive procedures with the ability to look at the person in front of you and having a live overlay of their blood vessels or nerves under ultrasound.
•I have already seen vets with ultrasounds to check livestock pregnancies have probes that feed directly to VR headset
•Electronic wiring projected while you are on the job as an instructional tool particularly in difficult to access locations and you can send varieties of manuals/plans
•Architectural walkthroughs for clients of CAD designed buildings
    •Military Sims (flight/ground combat etc)
•Links to ROVs in many industries

One of the issues is fidelity and precision of image as well as something that is ergonomic and if the headset starts looking like this with 8K video (at high enough refresh rate) then $3k is peanuts for the above industries.

  • Apple's AirPods a smash hit, shipments could reach 28M in 2018

Please make them in black (or Space Gray).
I think the white colour is part of the marketing thing that my recollection happened by accident. I think they made the original headphones in white only because it was the cheapest colour but they stood out and everyone knew you were using Apple gear. They then used that in the silhouette marketing promos for the iPods and subsequent iPhones. Now you see the contrasted white Airpods in peoples ears quite clearly and everyone has them (well mainly not so prominent in the Gym but around the place they are good and a lot of people I personally know who were skeptical are now big fans).

Think alternate colours are not in Apples marketing interest but there are companies that will colour them for you and AI had a competition for them in the past.

  • Apple software sees disastrous, embarrassing week with iOS springboard crash, macOS root u...

I think there are two separate issues:

    1) QA failed with the root access bug and it seems that if a fundamental access issue happened then something significant has happened underneath the hood of MacOS that they haven't really touted. This in turn means that significant changes have happened and that more bugs are potnetially in the wind.

    2) The date bug is odd. Whats the significance of the date where the issue happened (I'd be looking at programmers birthdays for a start) but this is a problem that even QA would have difficulty finding as it occurs on a date and it would be hard to test every single date to see if an issue is going to happen.

The timing of the two is unfortunate and as Neil has said its a bad week at the office for Apple. They also repsonded very quickly to a significant issue even at the expense of releasing a beta with the Apple Pay function not actually ready but they should have noted that prior to the release in the update notes.

Apple has copped it sweet and admitted the fault and expedited the resolution and life rolls on. I hope that they make sure that the information is more widely distributed so that non tech people get on the bandwidth and update as well (regardless of the negative publicity).

Apple has been trying to manage these sorts of issues better with more widespread beta versions to try and find problems that have not come out on routine screening but as the software becomes more complex it becomes harder to run all the scenarios that may happen and we have to expect that every so often a big bug gets through and as long as they recognise it early and fix it quickly then thats the best that can happen.

  • Review: Hover Camera Passport drone is light and takes good pictures, suffers from poor su...

I have a Mavic as well and agree with Quarst that the Spark would be better value for money (even without the 4k video).

The jittery video is just off putting and makes me feel a bit sick whereas the DJI cameras and stabilisation work very very well out of the box.
Also agree that DJI's customer service is a bit average (being nice here) so you have to take that into account but ultimately it is about the video image that you get and the one from the Camera Passport is very bad.

  • First look: Nvidia GeForce Now brings premium gaming to Mac

I have a couple of questions regarding this service that weren't brought up on the video.

    1) Will they have overseas servers (as I live in Australia and the lag would be in the 100's of milliseconds at best if the server is in the US)?
    2) What connection to the internet is required for fast speeds? (ADSL 2 and above?)
