  • Dutch antitrust regulators launch probe into Apple Pay

I am so, so, so excited about some government trying to micromanage Apple's services to the point where Apple just gives up and says, "Fine, we won't sell iPhones or internet services to anyone in your country. Buh-bye." Let's see how that helps consumers in the Netherlands "increase their freedom of choice." Doesn't the Dutch government understand that the iPhone itself IS a choice? The only way that the Netherlands could mandate this is if they made the iPhone the only legal smart phone that anyone in the Netherlands could ever use. In that case I would back them up. Android has a 57% share of smartphones in the Netherlands and iOS has 42%, and they want to boot iOS out of their country? How does that increase choice? That will hand a 99% marketshare to Android. Where's the choice then?
First of all: the Dutch government is not taking a stance against Apple, neither are they trying to remove Apple from the Dutch market or  trying to limit user’s choice to Android only; they’re investigating if limiting the NFC chip from others using it, is illegal (hurting consumers or abusing market power).
I’m sure they’ll find out it is in the best interest of users (like in Australia), and after this probe it will be clearer what Apple’s motivation is. For Apple it’s actually more effective this way, than having to spend millions on advertising to prove the same (with less credibility).

  • Apple One fails to solve issues with multiple Apple IDs

I was given no such option to switch from iCloud storage to One. And now with 4 TB shown as available, I see no storage subscription to cancel. I've only ever used one AppleID for App Store purchases, iCloud and subscriptions. (I only need a little over 1 TB.)
The need for 2 Apple ID’s was very obvious. Before family sharing it was the only way to share app acquisitions between family members. My wife and I shared the same iTunes/App Store account to purchase music and apps, while having separate iCloud (me.com) accounts for personal files and book purchases and reading history.
With family sharing this became obsolete, but we’re  (at least I am) stuck with a separate iTunes/Apple Music/Music Library account.

  • Google versus the US Department of Justice's antitrust lawsuit -- the story so far

I wonder if Apple could create and maintain its own search engine for under $11 billion per year. In fact, if Apple offered a search engine (with privacy measures) for $10/month, I'd buy into that without any hesitation. Does anyone else here value privacy?
Apple is. There’s already prove of it.
It’s interesting, however, how governments would react on that. Then the argument against Apple going into the search business could be that Apple would grow too big ‘because they do everything’.
The problem seems to be that most government officials do not really understand what is going on and what the stakes are, because everything is getting too complex and interwoven. Of course you can hire someone that understands it, but that'd make the government dependable of these advisors, which would be undesirable as well... kind of a catch  22...

...that’s because it ís complex I guess.

  • Protect Scotland contact tracing app taps Apple-Google Exposure Notification system

All noble efforts that will come to nothing. Too many will not use these contact tracing apps, due to either lack of awareness or willful non-use.
Too early to judge. Besides the fact that the effort is indeed noble, it’s also a relatively privacy safe way to contact tracing. Once people get informed about the technology behind it, there’s a change that people are willing to install it.
And the responsibility of getting people informed is one a government needs to take.
I hope governments will be wise enough to do.

  • Apple first U.S. company to hit $2 trillion market cap

A long way to go before they’re in Dutch East India Co. territory (about $7 trillion valuation), but it’s a start. ;)
Groan, here we go again, with an utterly bogus valuation comparison.

Btw, the guy that invented wheel is worth 700 billion trillion in today’s dollars, so please stop.
Except that the guy that invented the wheel didn’t start a company with publicly traded shares. The Dutch East India Co. was the first company that did (in 1602). And that did so for almost 200 years.
Wander how many trillions Apple will be worth 150 years from now... 😄
