  • US Justice Department likely to block Sprint & T-Mobile merger

What people aren’t seeing is that Sprint is on its last leg. If the merger doesn’t go through, we’re more likely looking at 2 and a half national carriers instead of 3. Sprint will die wheezing without this T-Mo bailout/buyout. You want to talk less competition and higher prices? T-Mo is the only carrier keeping that thought alive. SoftBank sure won’t for much longer.
As a sprint customer, I fear that sprint won’t survive long term without this purchase.  The quality of their network has improved, but I just don’t see them surviving longterm.  The cost of setting up a nationwide 5g network has to be in the billions.  You have to upgrade existing cell sites, and add many new cell sites.  As the frequency increases, the distance a signal travels decreases given a constant power output.  Physics means 5g’s higher frequencies will require more cell sites for constant coverage.  More cell sites means more money, money that I question if sprint can afford.  Between T-Mobile and SoftBank, sprint needs a bailout of some kind.  They have a lot of debt coming due, including almost $10b in 2023.  I hope that they could go it alone, I just don’t see it from the outside.

  • Samsung Galaxy S10 5G now on sale via Verizon, but can only use 5G network in two cities

I think 5g is much further out than anyone thinks.  I remember 4g took forever to rollout.  5g requires so many more towers/access points, which means physically going and doing things, that it’s going to be a while before it means anything to anyone.

  • No, Apple, a slightly bent iPad Pro straight out of the box isn't acceptable

I will be happy to get a bent one for 50% off. :).

I purchased a used iPhone 6 from a coworker recently for a family member.   This coworker is meticulous about their things and has never placed their phone in their pants pocket.  I had taken it to the Apple Store to have the $29 battery swap before the deal expires on 12/31.  Apple performed an inspection in store and said “we may not be able to swap out the battery because the chassis is bent.”  Sure enough, it was if you looked carefully.  The 2nd tech who was to actually do the repair reluctantly gave it a green light.

I know that the 6 was part of “bend gate”.  It makes me wonder if it left the factory already bent.

Based on my experience at the Apple store, I would be concerned to have a new iPad Pro where the same story might unfold without my happy ending.
Given apple’s marketing about how perfect things are suppossed to be, this is a major failure.  Apple products are to be engineered to a finer degree than other products.  That is the expectation.  That is what they sell their products on.  Knowingly Selling an imperfect product with an obvious visual flaw out the door is not acceptable.
