Large US developers are avoiding third-party App Store alternate payment plans
I suspect that the judge wanted to force Apple to allow for steering outside of apps for credit card payments, but they didn’t want to explicitly mandate that Apple stop trying to make any money off those developer partners. I think the judge knows full well that they are on shaky ground trying to force Apple not to make any money off third party apps.I can’t think of any other business where courts have mandated that companies have to perform some service for free.It would be interesting to see a lawsuit force Google to provide the absolute best search results they can, even if that means the ads get sorted further down. -
Apple to unveil AI-enabled Safari browser alongside new operating systems
I’d love a feature that automatically recognizes when people have gone to a scam website. There’s a few easy things that could be done. Check for any UI elements that seem to be flashing, or changing in size to confuse the user. Have the browser check the page for terms like virus, compromised, Apple Security (when not on a website known for talking about Apple or security). There are an increasing number of scams targeting seniors and a lot of them rely on the fact that seniors often browse the web in full screen mode and when you’re in full screen mode, it can be very difficult for elderly people to figure out how to get out and so they’ll often get sucked in to calling the scammers. -
Some users are randomly getting locked out of their Apple ID accounts
If this was an active choice thing, I suspect somebody at Apple decided to lock people out of their iCloud password had appeared in a data breach connected with their email or phone number. That’d be my guess. That said I suspect they did it because they’d noticed some sort of vector that was being used by an organized crime group or something like that. IE all the passwords that were stored in one of those big password storing apps that got hacked were all being exploited and causing accounts to be turned into bot accounts used for either iMessage spam or for money laundering or something.
of course Apple won’t give anyone public facing the rationale because that would tip off the crime group doing the exploit.
I wish Apple would let people get their password reset by registered mail where it has to be hand delivered to the address that was already on the account and the user has to pay for it using a credit card with their name on it. -
Apple's next HomePod could be a desktop or TV sound bar
If they make this a sound bar I think it would be insane not to put an Apple TV in it as well.Heck, they could have the HomePod mini, the 2’d gen HomePod, the TheatrePod/CinemaPod, and then the HomeStick leave Apple TV branding for TV+ and brand all of Apple’s home offerings as some variant of a HomePod. Make a stick for people who just want the Apple interface on another TV, and have the HomePod for people who want a home theatre experience. Realistically I’m not even sure it makes sense to keep selling separate HomePods without HDMI out.Honestly you might even wanna allow for HDMI in so that you don’t have to worry about ARC or eARC or anything, just let the HomePod allow your other devices to connect to the TV through it. Maybe even offer low latency ML power upscaling for old consoles?
