  • Parallels Desktop 16 revamped to run Windows faster on macOS Big Sur

If developers can make Windows run on a Pi4, I’m sure Parallels can do it as well. The question is if x86 app’s on W10 arm on an ARM instruction set are going to be sufficient performant, it’s been shown they run significantly slower. This of course can be compensated by faster Silicon. I’m sure developers of Parallels already have this on their def kit, but that would not be representative for performance and would also brake their NDA.

I've seen W10 on ARM emulating X86 code and yes, it was terribly slow. But that's one emulator - an MS made emulation within W10 ARM. There are other options as well - X86 emulation in ARM Parallels running X86 Windows, or X86 Parallels adapted to use Rosetta 2 to run X86 Windows. Each way it would perform differently, and I believe the last one would be the best performant.

This is true, though I wonder if the ASi transition will start other vendors looking at ARM more seriously too. It usually takes someone like Apple to take a bold step for the rest of the industry to follow. A switch from x86 is needed, but whether this will be enough I'm not sure. Businesses as usual will only switch if they are dragged kicking and screaming, and then will need a 100% compatible translation layer.

That said, I need x86 Windows. Unless there's a seismic shift in the industry toward ARM, I will unfortunately not be getting another Mac - after being an Apple aficionado for 23 years.

23 years? So you've began on some PowerPC 603, 604 series? Running Windows toy slow in VirtualPC? I'm pretty sure there are some X86 emulation - ARM coded projects on github.. and as there was a plenty of linux stuff comming to MacOS X in it's early days, I believe there will be similar situation this time. There will be some solution to run X86 Windows on Apple Silicon Macs very soon.

  • Russian watchdog says Apple's App Store rules and behaviors are anticompetitive

While I have spoken out about Spotify being charged 30% (or 15%) for something I call a “transaction”, which I see unfair, and after that being entertained by extremised DEDs article taking on opinions like that, almost all the other new “anticompetitive” lawsuites that have popped out later seems almost like a hostile coordinated attack on Apple worldwide. Not like someone is coordinating it exactly, but others feeling “this is the time to strike, to take them down”. And all these cases I call BS! Fkoff Russian FAS, fkoff EU foolocracy and every other suing! Apple does no monopoly! An alternative to iOS, macOS, or any other Apple OS devices and ecosystem is available, and cost less to obtain. You simply cannot call Apple stuff a monopoly like MS Windows and Explorer of its days, because you don’t have to spend more money to switch! Apple offers luxury, and luxury is defined by perfection which is evolving a curated content. If somebody wants cheap unsafe jungle, Androids are there.. and are making phonecalls, measuring your heartbeat, integrating your car, etc. We the society control the narrative!! and we see your unreasonable greedy attempts! All these lawsuites and unreasonable antitrust investigations will crash and burn, I feel very sure about that. Btw. Apples blocking xCloud and Stadia is absolutely reasonable. Such services have high carbon footprint, hogging connectivity and needlessly raising RF pollution. Apple is thinking out every little!

  • Windows 10X delayed, devices won't arrive until 2021

That guess is wrong. This may come as a shock to you but Microsoft is the dominant force in PC computing. They are not in a position to where they have to respond to anything that Apple does until Apple's marketshare like triples. It would be great for someone to come up with a competitive alternative to Apple's offerings ... let me state this again. Microsoft has 90% of the market. Because of software compatibility and other issues, they have no reason to believe that ARM-based Macs are going to lead to this massive shift. Apple designing its own desktop chips is a huge deal to the Apple fandom but outside of that nobody cares, just like most people really don't care about Intel vs AMD on the Intel side.

That guess might be indeed correct. You're missing something! Once I was working in a fab as an SMT line operator. The line itself has 10 PCs, loaded with Windows XP embed, and Windows 10 - and that's what Microsoft calls "10 users" in their numbers. However, more than 30% of all my collegues has Macs at home.
Try to understand the value of alleged "user bases" - 10 PCs running all the time all the same software.. and swapped very often. Tons of PCs in and tons of wreck out non-stop. Compare to the computers at home, with users buying software, using services, and maintaining the device for much longer. And this is no 9% for Mac worldwide, this is hell much more. Microsoft is ringing alarm when they just have realized where's Apple going with their own silicon, processor independent macOS, along with advanced dev resources. Sorry, I really like your rationale, but get real about this!

  • Should you wait for Apple Silicon to upgrade to a new Mac?

linuxplatform said: Apple's position will be that Apple Silicon is the best thing ever to happen in the history of computing and that Intel CPUs are the equivalent of fossil fuels. Intel-based Macs will be second-class citizens to be derided, mocked and laughed at.

    Nah, just ignored.

this year i brought my macbook air 2010 into the apple store were i purchased the notebook, no one there cared.
no one at apple cares about their older products, luckily others do, which is all that matters.

Not "older", but vintage products. Understandably.

  • Apple Silicon will force industry to reconsider use of Intel chips, says ex-Apple exec

I have no idea what linuxplatform is smoking, but when I go for a coffee almost anywhere here in Prague, I can usually see even one or two PC laptops along all the iPads and MacBooks. I can see a guy playing some game on his whatever branded Android phone in public transport, all around the others holding their iPhones. Or when I get the express city train and heading thru wagons to the dining car.. I can see some new PC laptops too, but all the types and generations of MacBooks prevailing. Hmmm, this MacBook Pro guy is running Cinema 4D on Windows.. is that native boot or?.... Oh, app switcher and there goes Safari with familiar ambient :)
Here I'm talking about relatively poor country in comparison to the west !
What makes PC sales (and usage) so high, are the employees of big corporations. But they are also the people at home - and that's it.

Linuxplatform guy is repeatedly highlighting the expensiveness of the Mac. I would say otherwise! For me, the Mac is less expensive, than almost any PC, due to it's top value preservation. Let me example.. I'm forced to use companys windows PC at work. My wife in another company too. Both companies are buying tons of new laptops all the time.. Lenovo, Dell, whatever. They break alot and maintaining them is not cost efficient for long. Here are the sales! One year old PC notebook (unless some gaming laptops) sells for near nothing. It goes to the landfill with primitive failures.
I bought my MacBook Air early 2014 second hand almost 6 years ago for some 800 USD. I can sell it today for 400 USD easily, but why should I? I'm astounded that my original battery still let me do basic stuff and browsing on wifi for 7+ hours after these years, the display lid doesn't creak and hold still.. and my Mac supports actual macOS Catalina.

I should avoid talking in percents. Mac market is huge.. and with Apple Silicon comming, I believe it will grow on steroids! It's time for an upgrade and I'm going to be an early adopter of AS based Mac notebook. My next expensive, value retaining, Earth friendly computer.
