  • Samsung reportedly completes Galaxy Fold redesign, release date still unknown

On John Gruber’s latest podcast he tells a story of Jony Ive being in an iOS software meeting the day it’s product was shown off on stage. A bunch of people in the room were talking about it. Ive went in to great technical detail on why this product would fail (I think based on prototyping Apple had done). The people in the room were amazed at the knowledge and level of detail he went into. Clearly Samsung rushed this because they wanted to be able to say first. Backfired on them.

  • Editorial: WSJ Jony Ive story scoffed at by Apple experts, delicious to critics

SJ made waves not because the market was young... he created the market.

This kind of visionary thinking is missing now. Instead we get decisions that sometimes move backwards. iPhone X is a fine phone but it didn’t redefine a category. Taking the home button out saves money but creates a brick of a device under certain conditions. The notch is ugly and make UI cramped and lacking on top. I feel that there’s a chance in hell SJ would have approved the notch. Taking MagSafe out out saves money, and removes beautiful functionality that differentiated Apple. Four identical looking but not functionally identical ports in the new MacBook is confusing, underwhelming thinking.

These are not decisions from a company obsessed insanely great. They are good decisions if you want to make more money.

No, nothing wrong with incremental,  but when that’s all there is, then it basically a slow downward spiral.

So this isn’t about innovation, this is about you don’t like certain decisions Apple made.

And CNBC had Nilay Patel on today to discuss Cook’s letter. Nilay isn’t on the inside. He had no idea what’s going on inside the company. Another blowhard pontificating.

Read this. I trust Matthew Panzarino more than anyone at the WSJ. https://techcrunch.com/2019/07/02/apple-sans-ive/

Listening to John Gruber’s podcast, I wish people would stop saying Ive took over software. He absolutely did not. The human interface team at Apple is one part of software. There’s an entire software engineering team of thousands of employees run by Craig Federighi. Craig Federighi took over iOS software from Scott Forstall, not Jony Ive.

  • Apple plans cheaper iPhone for China with new Touch ID, claims iffy report

No Face ID and Touch ID under the screen may end with full display iPhone without the notch. Actually such model might sell more than all X series combined. It would be unfair to limit that model only to China.

    Face ID is great.
    Is it a breakthrough: YES
    Is it implemented perfectly: YES
Is it more secure: YES if kept away from kids and siblings .
    Is it a need: NO
Is it for the masses: NO

Apple has managed to bury Face ID into the small bezels of the new iPad Pro. Two bezels of that width, top and bottom might be preferred to a bezel-less but almost-full display with a notch on an iPhone...

Apple has fortunately avoided that notch trap on the iPad Pro, couldn’t they make the iPad Pro smaller, removing all bezels to get almost-full display with a notch? They couldn’t go so far, an iPad Pro cannot tolerate such a compromise as the notch.
I wish people would stop obsessing over the notch. It’s so stupid and not worthy of all the attention and angst it gets. Apple can’t go completely bezel free on the iPad otherwise how would you hold the thing?
