I mean...this could not have been more clear or more obvious to everyone on the outside looking in. No one wants to admit or acknowledge it...but the exact worst thing that could have happened (Apple losing its "DNA", the spirit that Steve Jobs infused) is exactly what happened in short order from Tim taking over. Operations above all else. It really is that simple. Yes, we’ve been seeing it for years, but the apologists keep slamming us for “talking while not being on the inside”. I wouldn’t be as irritated as I am with Apple if they’d hadn’t been so much better before; had they kept their focus on the product, rather than the operations/MBA-mentality they clearly have had for years now. They’ve mistaken pathology for vision (thinness and minimalism as a core ideology are not visionary for products intended to provide function); this pathology it is a hollow mockery of what the company’s actual vision was prior to 2013.

This at least explains the notch! It always puzzled me how Ive would design something so functionally bad considering his history. Now that at least makes sense, he had kinda bailed out by that point because the nature of Apple had changed from visionary to status quo.

Agreed. But 10 years?!? The thing is based on a phone. Just another iOS device. It was outdated the day it was released. $400 or $10,000 for something that will be replaced with much better technology in 12 months? And EVERY subsequent 12 month period thereafter. Smart consumers for going for the cheaper model.

Overall, this is a stunning article, if true. I get that there's a lot of secrecy around what Apple does, but Ive's legacy would have been served much better if he would have better explained and defended his design decisions, and even taken responsibility for fails.

Interesting that “other executives” consented to the announcement of an unfinished, vaporware project as the “AirPower” wireless charging pad.

Tim Cook has always promoted teamwork over one-man shows. He wouldn’t ridicule himself by playing the Steve-clone. He is a very loyal person to both Steve Jobs and other members of the team. If he didn’t show up in Ive’s studio this is for respect to Ive’s authority and talents.

The new endeavour of Ive appears to be entrepreneurship, not a retired-style one man show. And Tim Cook might have pushed Ive into that path, seeing him more and more alienated to the company he devoted the best years of his life, promising his personal support. We don’t know, the announcement by Tim Cook was very promising and enthusiastic, we’ll see in a couple of years. Ive’s company might have grabbed the next big thing project of Apple thanks to Tim Cook.
