  • Facebook VP Nick Clegg attacks Apple over privacy criticism

    JinTech said:
Uh. Don’t you need a hardware platform to use Facebook? Unless you go to the library or use someone else’s hardware, you still need to buy the hardware to run their “free services.” This guy is a dimwit.
Sure but doesn’t Facebook on the web run on any hardware? His larger point is correct. Every company takes swipes at other companies with different business models. I remember Jeff Bezos on stage saying Amazon wants to make money when you use their device not when you buy it. And Apple of course can have this huge commitment to privacy because their business model isn’t advertising. But the reason the open web exists as it is today is because of advertising. If people were charged for every website they went to and every thing they did on the web it would be a shadow of what it is today.

Basically, Spotify is shitting their pants over Apple Music and are doing everything they can to try and survive since they don't make much of a profit. Apple Music has got to be slowly eating into their revenue stream. I think once investors start pulling out, it's game over for Spotify.
The thing is, Apple Music isn’t their problem.

Every user added costs them money, and they’re not making a profit on every user.

Their problem is their business model.
Exactly. I've been saying this for years. Spotify was founded on an unsustainable business model. You'd think the folks running that company would have figured it out by now.
And the only reason Apple’s isn’t is because they can subsidize it by the profit they make on other things, like hardware. We’re getting to a point where only a few big companies will own everything.

  • Editorial: Apple's move to ARM is possible because most users want power more than compati...

I believe project Catalyst is the key to this transition. It is the Trojan horse. If they can convince a mass of developers to embrace the conversion and especially if they made the process work effort ly in reverse, they will have an enormous catalog of apps that will run on ARM but are customized for use on the Mac.

Do you see companies like Adobe, Avid, Autodesk, Microsoft, Unity etc. embracing this? If someone can’t use Pro Tools or AutoCad on the Mac because it’s not ARM compatible I can’t see it being successful. So maybe the pro Mac line stays Intel. I’m still curious to see what Apple does with the 12” MacBook. Has it not been updated because of Intel or is Apple saving it as an ARM Mac test case? I think it would be the perfect product to start with.

  • iPad wins again, Google cancels upcoming tablet products

Uhm, this is the opposite of a win!  The secret to great products is great competition - losing an adversary doesn't translate into a great win.  This is a pity and the battle moves squarely to Microsoft and its Surface line - who would have thought?
Me, actually. I’m also someone who said Microsoft would hit $1T market cap before Google ever did and I was right about that. Btw, Microsoft’s market cap is currently just over $1T. Apple’s is $917B.

This headline is ridiculous. As if Google tablets were ever competition for iPad. Maybe AI could gloat if Microsoft canceled Surface products. But not now.
