  • iPadOS 15 confirms Apple's M1-equipped iPad Pro is a V8 engine powering a Ford Pinto

A pity that DewMe’s post isn’t getting more traction here.

I have very specific and narrow use cases for my 12.9 IPP that a MBP or some Microsoft-inspired Franken-device will absolutely not satisfy.  Yes, I also own a 16” MBP too.

Complainers looking for one device for all use cases would be better served fleeing to Windows.  No one wants to admit they just can’t afford to have the best in class of both form factors.  That’s not Apple’s problem, it’s theirs.  And they’re trying to shift the problem to someone else than themselves.
There are cases where someone cannot have two devices.  And while it's true that it's not Apple problem, there are many cases where you cannot blame the customer.  The pandemic have been very hard for many people, and they try to have the best device based in their budget.  And maybe they decide for a hybrid device, considering they have something they can use as a notebook and as a tablet.

Also there are cases where someone prefer a hybrid device.  I have a Surface Pro 4 and I have seen it's limitations, but also where it shines.  I see no difference from my Surface and my iPad when browsing the internet, use social apps or watch TV / movies in Netflix or Hulu.  Also works very good for annotating documents, spreadsheets and PDF files.  And when I'm on the office, I connect it to the Surface Dock and my 4K monitor and it works like a full desktop device.

This doesn't means that the Surface is perfect.  Like I said before, I have seen many of it's limitations.  But it's clear that it has many benefits, and I can understand when someone prefers a Surface device over an IPad.
The difference is that your Windows Surface device takes you out of the Apple ecosystem thereby denying you the entirety of it’s benefits.

  • Google's FLoC has 'significant' privacy problems, Mozilla says

FLoC has not been finalized, still a work in progress just as the article mentions, and a paragraph that all the commenters so far have appeared to have missed reading.

"He added that the issues would only be a problem if FLoC was pushed out in its current form -- they could still be fixed. Mozilla has published more information, and has offered some potential solutions, in a deeper analysis."

    “Sh**!! Someone found our exploit!”
That's why open-sourcing it works so well. Almost impossible to hide anything, and a good policy that Google very often uses. Personally I'd love to see other big techs be more transparent and open-source software more. Tens of thousands of eyeballs do tend to keep things honest and upfront.
    Excellent point about open source.

Apple made a mistake in managing perceptions in the iPad Pro. If they had followed their past updates they would have put the a14x into the 2021 Pro and everything that followed on would have been “normal” with the same folks either praising or complaining about the new features of iPadOS 15. Instead everyone sees the M in the M1 chip, no thanks to Apple btw, and somehow can’t get past the coincidence of the same letter being in macOS.

I for one and excited about the real advancements going on, not the hyped up low hanging fruit fake angst that people claimed to be outraged over. Anyone with the least bit of imagination can see some exciting times for the Apple software and hardware ecosystem and I suspect that once the iOS/iPadOS 15/macOS 12 combination hits the streets and people start to find out what Apple can do with the combination of a consolidated hardware and software platform can accomplish we’ll see a change of tune, except of course, for those who think trolling somehow brings something to the conversation (it doesn’t).

We want our constitutional rights to privacy, whether some people think we have them or not.
When Judge Robert Bork was nominated for the Supreme Court he was asked about a right to privacy. He said that there was no constitutionally guaranteed right to privacy. He didn’t say in relation to this or that issue. There was none at all, period. When questioned further on this point he doubled down on that assertion. Now Bork did not make it to the Court, but several of his law clerks and students have made it into Federal courts and I think at least one has made the high court as well.

Yes Virginia, there IS a deliberate and coordinated war on the right to privacy.
Santa has the most advanced surveillance operation on the planet. He knows everything about you.

  • The bell is tolling for Intel Macs with the arrival of the first Apple Silicon specific fe...

Some might say that everything the M1 system can do, the Intel system can do just as well. That's completely missing the point of this article. These new changes, facilitated by a consolidated hardware platform and software teams are an exciting glimpse into a future vision of personal computing. It's the sheer totality of the changes across their OS's that excited me the most. It's finally seeing a vision of personal computing come together that isn't a hodgepodge of 1980's design hardware and software duct tape thats been limiting the platform for ages. the changes in Notes, for instance, represents a paradigm shift in in how we will be able to consolidate information. On device Siri frees us from the limitations of having to always be connected and makes the iOS devices even more useful. These are just a few of the changes that, combined with the others, will be the basis for even more advanced systems in the future. Now, where are my shades?
