that's not how the FBI thinks. If they can pay 1 million USD for something that costs $1, they will pay the 1 million and ask Congress for more money to beef up their annual budgets and justify their own existence.
They paid the money, the exploit worked, then they found out a simple search on Google would have given them the same information for free.  No refunds as they paid in Bitcoins !!!!  B)
Everyone knew that there was no relevant info in this phone. Only an idiot would use a work phone to plan a terrorist attack after destroying his personal phone to cover his tracks.

Since there was nothing on the phone, and everyone else except the FBI knew there was nothing on the phone, then $1 was too much to pay for the hack.

  • Dead Apple employee identified as 25-year-old software engineer, report says [u]

One suicide (for which we don't know the cause) is not an indicator of "workplace conditions" one way or another at Apple. Apple has a responsibility *to a certain degree* in terms of ensuring a safe and healthful workplace environment, and then beyond that they aren't responsible for someone's personal choices.

Some of the comments in this thread are eye-wateringly stupid, which is actually far worse than deliberate trolling in this case, because the former is not good news for general brain function.
Let's not jump to conclusions. Suicide can have many causes that are external to the work place. I have seen happy and functional people plummet into depression due to a great loss either financial or of someone they loved. I have also seen what depression does to people.

I dealt with a lot of software engineers (code monkeys) in my previous job and many of them were socially and personally troubled.
Strange. I deal with software engineers all day long and these people are some of the sharpest, social and kind people. The problem must be you.

This bill is at the pinnacle of Congressional ignorance and arrogance.
