Back in March 2015 Tim Cook visited the Palo Alto Apple Store and was wearing an Apple Watch with the red dot. There was a very positive reaction to this unique look. Lots of people wanted the red dot. So much so that a company even started selling stickers to customize the look of the Watch and enable this look.
Now two and a half years later Apple do the red dot and there is a mostly negative reaction! Ironically, the company that started because people wanted a red dot is now the one people are turning to to hide it.
It's interesting how people desire something they see that's unique, that they can't easily get, but when that very same thing is the standard product they think it's horrible.
To me this is the more interesting story.

The first version of this article applied Gruber's comments about the theater structure to the main building.
I kindly left a comment saying that I the way I read it Gruber was referring to the theater. Now the article is re-written and my comment has been removed. Why remove my comment? Why not just thank me? -

There is a possibility (all be it a slim one) that they are using a new material and new process. It could be a bulk metallic glass alloy (aka LiquidMetal) and an injection molding process. This would be technically challenging and would impose several design constraints because of the injection molding process and the fact that the material is too tough to be machined.
Some rumors said that the phone was "all glass" and one that it has "glass sides". This would technically be true if it is a Bulk metallic glass.
The color and finish of this alloy could easily be confused with polished stainless steel.
