  • Apple launches Apple Music Classical app

Should just be in a genre tab on Apple Music.

a lot of music catalogs on Apple Music. Just because this is a giant catalog doesn’t mean it needs its own app.

Biography info, etc would fit nearly as a link or accordion element.

More steps to do the same thing. Not good.
It’s not the number of tracks, it’s that the UX is different owing to some unique things about classical music.
It’s music. No need for separate UX. It’s just a way to justify a dedicated app.

But let’s say that you have a point - for sake of argument. Apple could easily implement a class where the classical tab of Apple Music gets its own look and behavior.

And yet none of that is necessary.

A music app is a music app.

If there is a better way to do it, then they should apply it to the app as a whole to benefit the entire thing.

Searching for, curating, creating playlists, and playing classical music is fundamentally no different than doing so for any other genre.

Tell us you don’t know anything about classical music without saying you don’t know anything about classical music.

  • The best apps for Apple CarPlay

I’m not even sure HOW to download an app onto CarPlay.
If an app on your iPhone has CarPlay functionality, it will appear on the CarPlay screen. If it doesn’t, it won’t. You don’t actually download an app onto CarPlay.

CarPlay is essentially a “dumb terminal” screen in your car that’s entirely dependent on your iPhone for functionality. None of the apps actually reside in the device in the car.

  • President Biden upholds potential Apple Watch ban

The spin on this report is making me dizzy.

The actual facts of the case appear to be this:

AliveCor held patents in the area of ECG reader tech. Apple built ECG tech into the Apple Watch. AliveCor claims Apple has violated its patents, and took two parallel actions. They 1) filed a patent infringement suit against Apple, and 2) asked the International Trade Commission to ban US imports of Apple Watch if  AliveCor wins the trial against Apple in the infringement cases.

Three things have resulted so far. 1) The courts invalidated AliveCor’s patents. 2) The ITC approved the import ban that would go into effect if AliveCor wins its infringement cases. 3) The President did not exercise his option to overrule the FTC.

This is not the same thing as suggested by this headline and article, that Joe Biden somehow sided with AliveCor to “uphold” a ban.

This whole thing is moot unless AliveCor turns everything around and wins the infringement case on appeal, which is unlikely. So why, other than cynical click bait, run a headline that makes it sound like Joe Biden is personally going to take your Apple Watch away?

  • Everything new in the iOS 16.4 beta

Here’s two capabilities I’d like to see Apple incorporate into iOS.

    1. A Siri shortcut to turn off FaceID.  People could use this if pulled over by police or in other situations where they want to better ensure security of their phone and data.

    2. The AppleTV controller app you can access via Control Panel should have a volume control.  The reason it doesn’t is that your iPhone doesn’t have an IR emitter.  However, your physical Apple TV controller does have such an emitter.  So why can’t my iPhone communicate to my Apple TV controller to tell it to adjust the volume?
If your AppleTV controls TV volume directly via HDMI, your controller app on the iPhone already will control volume too, using your iPhone’s volume buttons. There will be indicators on the edge of the screen to show that feature is active.

As for communicating with your ATV remote to control volume via its IR emitter, that’s not going to happen. For that to work, your ATV remote has to be left in a position where the IR emitter can be “seen” by your TV’s IR receiver. If it’s pointed in the wrong direction, or in a drawer, or between couch cushions, it won’t work. Apple isn’t going to create a feature that would fail in so many cases and depend on the user understanding why it’s failing. Too many won’t, and they’ll blame Apple for a failure that’s literally outside their control.

Apple is pretty consistent about simply not including a feature if it won’t be reliable or if it requires the user to understand it’s a workaround that necessitates additional external steps to be taken by the user to make it function. In this case, if you have to fetch the ATV remote and point it at the TV anyway, it’s better to simply let the user fetch the ATV remote and use it to control the TV volume. They’ll intuitively understand what’s going on, instead of banging on the volume control on their iPhone and getting angry because no matter how much you point you iPhone at the TV, the volume control that sometimes works isn’t working right now.

  • SiriusXM review: Great, except for a terrible CarPlay execution

I’ve tried streaming SiriusXM a few times when they’ve issued free trial offers. Apart from the suboptimal UI, my main criticism is low-bitrate poor sound quality. This was true even via their AppleTV app, where client-side bandwidth was definitely not a problem.

Lossy data compression is sort of expected when squeezing signal through satellites that cost a lot to upgrade. Streaming through the internet, however, shouldn’t require it. So it’s clearly a decision on their part not to invest in hardware to meet 2023 standards. The result is that SiriusXM is the AM radio of the 21st century.
