  • Canon ink cartridges become an unexpected chip shortage victim

Gillette invented the marketing scheme decades ago:  Give away the razor -- so the user has to buy their blades.   It was a classic that was taught in my marketing class in 1972.

But the printer companies have taken it too far:  the cost of their cartridges is beyond exorbitant.

As for Cannon printers:  my grandson's family has one and its a nightmare.   It locks up on a regular basis trying to print something from somewhere coming over WiFi and won't unlock until it's printed -- which it can't do.  So, nothing else will print.  There is no way to clear it.  The only solutions I've found is to try again in a couple days or leave it unplugged for an hour or two.
It's a well known problem as there are questions about it all over the internet -- but no actual solutions and nothing from Cannon -- particularly no fixes.

  • Apple loses lead Apple Silicon designer Jeff Wilcox to Intel

Competition is a good thing. I sure wish Apple, Intel and other chip makers were competing to build fabs all around the country and around the planet. Having everyone compete for the same fab space at one company in Taiwan is extremely poor long term planning considering China's latest moves.

China has no intention of shutting down either TSMC or Taiwan -- unless we force them to.   But that won't happen.

  • AT&T, Verizon pause 5G expansion plans for 2 weeks

I missed something...where is T-Mobile in all this?

T-Mobile bought and started using different frequencies for 5G (that don't interfere with aircraft landing equipment) awhile back.  Verizon and AT&T are late to the game, playing catch-up -- and not doing it very well.  They thought they had the FCC under control (and they pretty much did under Ajit Pai) so they thought they could keep selling the old crap at high prices while T-Mobile raced ahead into modern telecommunications.

The auctions where these spectrums were sold were set-up by Ajit Pai who was a shill for Verizon.   Hopefully the new FCC head does a better job managing our airwaves.

  • The Apple Watch 'future of health' on your wrist is likely still years away, say doctors

The last time I was at Kaiser, the nurse asked me, and I am not joking "what is that on your wrist?" She was probably in her late 40's too.

My experience has been the opposite.   I had nerve problem in my shoulder and saw a bunch of physicians, nurses, and PTs.  It seemed like everyone of them was wearing an Apple Watch!

One advantage, if nothing else, is their water resistance -- since health care people do a lot of handwashing.  They can use the alcohol based antiseptic too -- but that can really dry out the skin when it gets used multiple times a day.

  • The Apple Watch 'future of health' on your wrist is likely still years away, say doctors

Where the Apple Watch can mostly revolutionize medicine is not in direct treatment of diagnosis -- but in research.

Most of the chronic "Age Related" diseases that eat up most of our healthcare resources can be mitigated, prevented and even reversed with healthy lifestyles.  But, a main obstacle to studying healthy lifestyles and their impact has been the ability to gather data.

The research community casts a suspicious eye towards the self report and recall of patients:
-- How many hours did you exercise over the past month?
-- What was you average heart rate as a percentage of its max?

The Apple Watch can and does eliminate that problem.   Researchers are now able to gather reliable, objective data free of error cheaply, quickly and effectively.  Apple's research project makes it possible for researchers to gather direct information from the Apple Watch.  They know if you exercised and for how long, how often and at what intensity.

Apple themselves is backing such a study.  It's their "Heartline Study" which gathers patient health data from the Health App and relates it to whether they develop A-Fib -- or not.
There is also the "heart and movement" study going on -- and others....
