  • Apple hardware subscription could shift focus away from iPhone shipments

Kind of funny in that this is EXACTLY what the phone industry was doing before Apple got into the game.  'Subsidized' phones buried the cost of the phone into the monthly fees, and people could then go get new phones every 2 years.  Keeping the same old phone didn't get you a reduction in your phone bill, so it made sense to go out and get a new one.

It was a real struggle for carriers that had to explain to people that they couldn't just get another $10 phone when they broke theirs, and the full price was something much higher.  This is essentially exactly the same thing all over again!

  • Apple debuts Apple TV+ and Apple TV Channels for cord-cutters, integrated into TV app

Kind of 'meh' so far. It's really not obvious what's new or different. Not having Netflix, or cable behemoths like Xfinity or Charter, are a problem for me.
Yeah, the AppleTV+ thing seems to be interesting, but we'll see how well it actually comes about.  If they can find a way to allow people to actually affordably watch ala-carte and pay when they want to versus a huge monthly cable bill, well, then maybe we've got something.

  • Apple issues AirPort Express firmware update adding support for AirPlay 2

It breaks my heart that Apple discontinued their Airport products.  They are by far the best built, most reliable units I've ever owned.  Sure, others like DLink, NetGer, Linksys, etc.. may have more features for tech-savvy people, but their quality is crap, are unstable, and always require a restart.

    What a shame.
Apple really should offer their own mesh wireless system. It doesn't matter that there are many competitors in this space, when people go in to buy an Apple solution, they want to buy everything Apple sells. It's just money they're leaving on the table, IMO.
There are a lot of things that Apple leaves on the table which allows for others to provide a solution.  Apple likes to focus on the big and flashy things that people replace all the time.  Routers are boring and too commonplace for Apple to get excited about.  They pretty much gave up on them 5 years ago, and it really shows.  There is so much more that could have been done with them that would make for a better home network experience, but again, too boring, so they hit the chopping block.

  • Apple axes Back to My Mac in macOS Mojave

Yes, there are other ways to accomplish what Back to My Mac did.  However, none are as simple and as elegant.  The cool thing about back to my mac is I could turn it on, then access my mac no matter where it was. No other software to install or configure. If I need to remote control a machine I could. If I needed to grab a file from anywhere on the hard drive, I could.

If I wanted to have to install and configure some other software to make that work, I might as well just get a Windows machine, as there are even more options available than there are on the Mac to do that.

  • New MacBook Air coming by end of quarter, research firm claims

Comparing the MacBook Air to the current MacBook Pro 13 and you're dealing with pretty much the same size machine.  The MBA is way less powerful, and has a lower quality display.  However, it does maintain the legacy ports and a magsafe charger, both of which will likely be gone in the next revision.

Keeping the machine in the lineup just to have a lower cost entry level machine makes sense.  However, MacBook Air name doesn't make sense, as the regular MacBook is much smaller.  If they can reduce the cost of the MacBook, then it would even out their lineup a little better.
