  • Apple discontinues full-size HomePod, to focus on HomePod mini

What has put me off touching the HomePod or Mini so far is the lack of portability. If I could charge it, unplug it and take with me and get a few hours listening cordless, I'd be more interested - but while it's permanently tethered - no thanks. There are decent cheaper chargeable cordless speakers out there, suitable for "round-the-pool" enjoyment.

  • Apple design chief Jony Ive to depart later this year, create new studio with Apple as cli...

I think he probably got bored to death with designing for Apple. I mean, the iPhone and iPad have reached their ultimate design goals, i.e. to be a thin edge-to-edge glass touch surface - not much more scope for design there - it's all going to be internals and software from now on. The MacBook Pro design iterations are minimal. And the Mac Pro is back to being a tower and screen. I think he's spreading his wings - a designer can't be very satisfied with changing button positions, screen sizes, ports and "thinness" - there has to be more to sink ones teeth into.

  • How to use your iPad as a display in macOS Catalina with Sidecar [u]

Thanks for the Video. I have been using Astropad and Duet up until now and they have not been the best experiences. So I'm super-stoked to see that Apple has finally implemented this natively. Certainly is a finger in the eye for quite a few companies - maybe even Wacom if this is taken to it's logical conclusion as a mini-cintique type experience.

  • How to trace an image with your Apple Pencil on the iPad Pro -- and when not to

On the subject of tracing, I often need to take an image from my iPad Pro to paper. For example, I might do a rough sketch on the iPad using Apple Pencil, then I might want to trace that onto some watercolour paper for hand painting. To do this I use a really simple but useful little App called "Lightbox Trace". It allows me to place an image on the screen and lock all finger input so that I can place my paper on the screen and trace with a pencil without any unwanted screen input. Very useful.

  • iOS 12 now on 75 percent of compatible devices, hit mark faster than iOS 11

I was not in a particular hurry to upgrade to iOS12. I was busy and didn't really care either way - but the nagging tactics that Apple employs and the infuriating tactic of making me punch in my pin every time I dismissed a nag to update wore me down and eventually I just did it for peace sake. So I wonder how many others did the same thing. Nagging users to death until they upgrade can hardly be counted as enthusiastic adoption.
If you want to stay on a certain version of your phone’s operating system just switch to Android and you’ll never get another update again. “Nagging users to death until they upgrade” is why developers have an easier time developing for iOS. They have a known base platform to work with. Android developers have to cope with dozens of different versions of that operating system. There’s a good reason for Apple to nag you to death.
Yeah, I understand all the arguments and I am not anti Apple being able to boast high upgrade rates. I am merely raising the issue of forcing me to enter my pin every time I choose "Not Now". I am not a developer, so is there a reason for this beyond just making it inconvenient to not choose to update at a given moment. I would be interested to know. If I am using my own iPhone surely a simple "Not Now" should suffice? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this.
