  • European Commission grills Apple and Google on app store risks and ad practices

"The government is the problem." - Ronald Reagan
The same government you gladly see help you when you need it. You can’t have it both ways.

  • Apple Silicon M3 Pro competes with Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU in AI benchmark [u]

This article is a bit misleading in that it only provides a single benchmark and suggests (by how it is setup) to be a great choice for it.
A single benchmark is useless in the field of AI, unless you are just doing that single task.
In the field of AI (in which I'm active) there are many tasks that demand different things from an SoC.

For example, in order to run a local LLM or image generation model, a lot of memory is needed (next to specs such as CPU).
A.I devs need to go all the way up to an M3 Max with 128gb of memory to run these models. With these specs 128gb really surpass it because it has direct access to it.
For most cases however, the 4090 definitely has the edge from a raw power p.o.v, not just because of the CUDA software<>hardware ecosystem
But then again, the M3 Max runs at 65 watts and the Nividia at 380 watts(!), and gets close enough not to be bothered by the slower performance.

  • iOS 17.2 arrives with Journal app, and big Apple Music changes

    dewme said:
Maybe it’s just me but the selection of the text insertion point using touch in iOS 17 seems to be changed in an undesirable way. I find it extremely difficult to set the cursor at a text insertion point without it selecting an entire adjacent word even when I’m trying to land in between words. This leads to insertions turning into overwrites, which kind of sucks. Maybe it’s just my fingers getting fatter or my eyesight getting worse, but I find myself using the spacebar cursor control a lot more than I used to. This doesn’t bode well for me trying the journal app.
    No it’s definitely gotten worse.
I personally have a lot of issues with text fields in social media and forums not properly behaving, where longer text starts to cut off from the screen and me having to fight unpredictable UI behavior to get to the copy I want to edit, paired with the exact problem you are describing.
Sometimes I long for the magnifying glass that popped up while moving the cursor, from the early iOS days.
I don’t think it’s always Apple’s fault, but a combination of factors, including the app or web framework being used and how the element is placed in the total hierarchy of elements. I know as a developer there are ways to minimize that but often it’s being overlooked by engineers solely focused on “it should work” rather than “it should be delightful to use”.

  • iPhone 16 rumored to get better Siri with AI and improved microphones

Siri is a backend service with some frontend. I would be very surprised if Siri ends up being exclusive to the iPhone 16.
They have to get rid of Siri in its current state, which is one big failure.

  • MacBook Pro 16-inch M3 Max review: Battery-powered Mac Pro power

I’m eagerly awaiting the MacBook Air M3.
The only thing I miss for that machine is Pro Motion. I wish Apple supported higher refresh rates on that device, like many PC laptop counterparts offer.
