  • New MacBook Air threatens both MacBook and MacBook Pro with Function Keys

Macbook hangs around with minor spec bumps until such time as Apple can switch it to an A series processor.  Air replaces the bottom end TouchBar-less 13" MBP and drives the ASP of the 13" MBP with TouchBar upwards.

The Macbook's place in the lineup is to be the smallest lightest Mac you can buy - if it's threatened by anything it's the iPad Pro.  The Air seems destined to be the general purpose laptop of the Mac line-up.  MBPs will just keep getting more expensive.

  • Apple Music overtakes Spotify in U.S. subscriber counts

What would happen if Apple banned Spotify from all of its devices?

They might lose a couple of device sales, but probably not many. Apple has the ability. But do they have the nerve?
They'd be subject to anti competition legislation. It's something of a mystery to me that they aren't already, for the fact that the Music app comes prebundled with every iPhone. Doesn't it feel a bit like Internet Explorer being bundled with Windows and giving MS an unfair advantage over Netscape?

Not comparable.  MS firstly had a much larger share of the market, and thus could wield vastly more influence, and secondly, which is the big one, their actions with IE amounted to 'dumping.'  MS gave away a product that Netscape charged for.

In Europe, the decision was made to address the IE issue by tackling the 'bundling' side, but that was just the least bad option for trying to shove the genie back in the bottle.

Since Apple Music requires a sub subscription in the same manner as Spotify does, and there is no reason to think Apple are artificially under-pricing the Apple Music service, a case for anti-competitive behavior here is currently weak.

  • Apple Pay debuts in Norway for Santander and Nordea customers

I wish they'd hurry up and start turning on Apple Pay Cash outside of the US.  Having to resort to PayPal for overseas petty transfers is annoying.

  • Startup seeks $200,000 from Apple over 'stolen' Shortcuts app icon

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple paid up.  Maybe they could win but it is pretty obvious that soneone at Apple copied the concept.  As such it looks really bad if Apple is seen beating up on a startup.
I doubt they did.  Representing an S, or Z with two opposed rectangular images is not a new conceit.  This is very likely a case where two different designers could come to somewhat similar results.

The only question Apple's lawyers need to address is would the average man confuse the two.  Here at least, Apple is probably on very solid ground.  This isn't like the Swiss Federal Railway Clock, where Apple were clearly taking the piss.

  • How to record your whole macOS screen, or a portion of it, with QuickTime Player

While I appreciate that AI forum-dwellers are very familiar with OS X and now macOS, the internet as a whole is not. This is for them.

If that were the case, then why aren’t there thousands of “Thank you, I never knew!” posts?
Why would there be? Have you ever known the internet to be particularly gracious?
Actually, I had no idea, because apart from accidentally launching QTP by double-clicking media files, I've literally never (in ten years of MacOS use) given the app any thought at all.  It's a crappy media player, so it wasn't my first guess for a screen recording tool.

So count me thankful for the heads-up.
