  • Tim Cook says return to office work plan is 'the mother of all experiments'

COVID proved what we all really knew anyway:  If you work in an office, your job can be done without leaving the house.  It's time to end commuting for office workers forever.

Hey, here's a thought:  Maybe it's time to mandate commuting pay.  If an employer decides a job can't be done from home, then that employer must pay the employee for time spent commuting.  That way people who really do have to be physically present get paid for ALL the time spent in work-related activities.
They already give you commuting pay...its call your paycheck. This sounds like someone trying to extort their employer for more money.
Exactly.  Those who insist on working from home should expect a downward adjustment to their paycheck.  They should also be cognizant of the potential limitations in the advancement of their careers.  Those who typically advance are social animals who thrive on the kind of personal interaction you can’t simulate on Zoom.  That’s just a reality.

Of course, you could start your own business and then you wouldn’t have to worry about any of that.

It's an experiment to come back to work? There is absolutely no health reason to do it.  Covid is endemic and not the plague we were all told it was.  The interventions clearly did nothing to stop it, from social distancing to masks to stay-at-home orders.  The virus does what it does.  We have vaccines, therapeutics, and strains that are far less deadly than the original.  For 90% of all people, Covid is a cold.  It's 99% or more of working-age people.   The reasons people are pushing for remote work have nothing to do with Covid.  It's about social engineering and remaking our society.  It's about "fighting climate change" and some bizarre Star Trek-like fantasy where money doesn't exist.

Every time I read one of your posts on COVID I think "I'm glad we people that were public health experts giving advice rather than this imbecile."

It is truly remarkable how many times you have insisted something was the case only to contradict yourself later.
Public health officials presided over a catastrophe in terms of school closures that will resonate for a generation.  I remain unapologetically furious with those who advocated for mass lockdowns and school closures.  The ‘stamp out COVID at all costs’ mentality drove countless small businesses and families into a ditch and widened the divide between rich and poor.  No one cared to weigh the costs of this unprecedented mitigation response.  This wildly irresponsible action should be something we all learn from.  Never again!

And Tim Cook, wasn’t the work from home thing the grand experiment?  What kind of mental gymnastics did it take to flip that on it’s head?

  • WWDC 2022 keynote was a showcase of Apple innovation, Katy Huberty says

And I’m really not digging the ‘trying to be too young and too cool’ emojis they have been using as of late.  Maybe it’s a generational thing.  But those emojis have an ‘ick’ factor that’s hard to shake.  it seems to be appealing to a rather small slice of the overall Apple user and coder base.

Thought it was a bit dull myself, nothing very surprising, the expected things were as expected and the things that even qualify as surprising (e.g. CarPlay 2) weren't very interesting.  iOS 16 and macOS Ventura barely even qualify as updates for me there's so little of use there.

Everything seems to have stagnated a bit while rumours about realityOS and cars are setting ridiculous expectations.
I felt the same.  Watched 2-3 minutes of the MacBook Air intro and then all of Jony Srouji’s M2 intro, which was the most interesting part but kind of short.  Fast wound through the other stuff.  Great stuff I’m sure.  But I didn’t have the stamina or will to watch it all the way through.  First time that happened.

  • Digital ID feature in Apple Wallet has expanded to Maryland

I registered for this in Arizona a few days after it became available.  I went through the facial recognition process and initiated the request an Apple wallet.  I was told I would receive notification within a few days, but it never came.  Don’t know what happened.
